Reply to "Earned or unearned"

The pitcher cannot commit an error while he is pitching. Only as a fielder can he commit an error. Errors are tallied by baserunners advancing a base/bases because of a fielding error that otherwise would have either kept the baserunner from advancing or being put out.

A passed ball only occurs when a baserunner advances because an error is charged.
