Taping a bat will extend its life for sure, it mainly keeps the grains from seperating prematurely. However if you get jammed it will break just like any other wood bat.

Tape is applied on the sweet spot of the barrell about 8-10 inches is what I have seen. Athetic tape is what you usually see.
