Explaining away an injury

My son tore his MCL and PCL in his second showcase game last summer. He also missed the fall showcase season. He's fallen off the radar screen except for a handful of colleges who have emailed asking about his recovery. He's expected to be cleared to start full rehab and pratice later today. He did not have surgery. He was on crutches and/or wearing a brace almost five months.

He's going to start contacting colleges again about getting in front of them in mid winter showcases. He's up against it. He's a senior. He can't hide/lie about missing the showcase season. The concern is coaches may see him as damaged goods. Sometimes a coach sees a kid who didn't have surgery as a surgery waiting to happen.

What's the best way to tell the truth and explain away the injury and providing confidence he's not an injury risk? While looking for advice from anyone, someone who has been though this (including not having surgery) would be helpful. He's not looking at JuCo or PG options. He's looking to jump back on track.
