Fielders technique to avoid hitting runner in back

Example, run gets picked off by throw from pitcher or catcher etc...but takes off to next base full speed instead of diving back (whether it be first basemen throwing to second, or third basemen throwing home)

What is the proper/most successful method to teach youth fielders how to get the throw/catch WITHOUT hitting the runner in the back? Anyone know drills to work the proper technique? Thank you
