I would say that if most of the parents wanted to show off their kids, the lack of instruction shouldn't be a concern. According the the quote above, receiving instruction and learning was not the primary objective. It sounds like they did not need to take many notes for follow up reasons, since the velocities might show that only a few names needed to be remembered.
