A HS teammate of my son was a freshman at GW in '21 and didn't get into a game, then transferred.  Not showing up on the '21 roster.  (FWIW went Juco and now committed to an ACC program.)

By definition, he is non-rostered.

Note, if he participated in any varsity practices, then he must be reported to the Dept of Education

Participants
Students who, as of the day of a varsity team's first scheduled contest (A) Are listed by the institution on the varsity team's roster; (B) Receive athletically related student aid; or (C) Practice with the varsity team and receive coaching from one or more varsity coaches. A student who satisfies one or more of these criteria is a participant, including a student on a team the institution designates or defines as junior varsity, freshman, or novice, or a student withheld from competition to preserve eligibility (i.e., a redshirt), or for academic, medical, or other reasons. This includes fifth-year team members who have already received a bachelor's degree.

Thus the difference between school's website and what they've reported to DOE.

Most reporting is within a margin of error, there are some that are out of whack.

Upon designing CBI, I came across this issue with 2016 Coastal Carolina.

Their website has 29 players,  but they reported 35, thus they remove 6.

I knew 2 of the players, one competed against my son in HS, the other played with him at a JUCO in 2017.

He had to get TJ Surgery, thus was removed from the roster, thus you might not find out why a person is not on the roster, whereas for transparency his bio should remain and updated, with the injury and medical redshirt.

Note, there might be more to the story, but a family needs to know more details concerning roster management before committing.

Note, I have a passion for this because my son went to a school that 2 players have arm issues prior to his arrival

He got injured in January, the medical staff wanted to give him a cortisone shot so that he could go pitch in early season tournament.  I had to intervene, bring him to our baseball physician.

Went to specialist (Dr. Morgan), who performed Kurt Schilling's surgery.

Diagnosis was SLAP tear. He remained in school to finish semester.  That was a bad mistake on my part, as for it impacted him mentally.

Had his surgery in summer. the rest of the story will come out in paperback.  lol
