I asked our pediatrician if the following wives take is somewhat accurate. It seemed to be with the kids I coached. 

A boy will grow to be 6-8 inches taller than his mother. 

Yes, it can be affected by exceptions in the family tree. Or the father's side having dominant genes. In fact, I have a friend with two short parents (5'8" and 5'2") who is 6'1". His brother is 5'8". My friend got the tall aunt's genes.
