I would agree that there would be no horrible negative for leaving, but that there is good in staying, particularly in the situation that you described. My son was invited to a showcase where we knew ahead of time that he was only going to be able to be there the first day. He had a prior commitment that he refused to miss, which was coaching his brother's Special Olympics softball team in a regional tournament. We figured that was a decent reason not to attend the second day.

His evaluation after the showcase was not hurt at all by him not being there the second day, and personally (I may be biased as his dad) he showed a lot of character in sticking with his commitment to his little brother's team.
