High School Freshman needs Bat $$

Need some input on best bats out there. Money is tight (I know join the club) and of coarse he likes the $399 ones. Also how long does a metal bat last? He will play 30ish games in H.S., around 75 summer games (2 tournements are wood bat).
Also should he use this bat for practice as long as it's not with a pitching machine or is that decreasing it's life? Any input any any question would be appriciated thanks.
