Hit by batted ball while on the base????

My understanding is if the runner is on the base and he gets hit with a batted ball, he can be called out if in the umpires judgemnet he could have avoided the ball. If he doesn't make an effort to avoid being hit, and basically LETS the ball hit him, he can be called out for interference.
