How Early is Too Early to Contact College Coach?

Question I have been asked and have wondered myself - If a young ball player is interested in certain schools (could be D1 all the way to NAIA), how early is too early to e-mail a college baseball program to simply plant a seed? I'm talking about an elite 14U or 15U level...certainly not a pre-teen of course.

Is there a steadfast rule to wait until perhaps 10th or 11th grade? If the player is on a good trajectory (i.e. already has size, speed, etc.), does that make it more of a consideration to e-mail?
