Yeah, in fact, if he is coaching the 18u scene, he should be very aware that a better player will need to join a team that will get more exposure and, in fact, encourage you to do so. He may even be able to help you. That conversation should not be nearly as hard as you are thinking it will be. A good friend and mentor will have your best interest at heart and that is definitely in your best interest.

Also, I know in our area, a few of the higher level travel teams have summer and fall programs and release the players that are off to college after summer, so fall can be a great "join" opportunity. Start investigating right now.
