Invited walk on vs. Roster spot

Son is a "late blooming" 2010 who has received a flurry of attention over the past couple of weeks. 2 of the schools that are interested are also very high on my son's non-baseball (academic) list. One is talking invited walk on on and the other (son's #2 academic choice) is talking roster spot with some $$. We are not necessarily looking for $$ - priority good college fit both academically and athletically (in that order). Is there a difference between the 2?
