Bats actually fit lengthwise inside the bag and for extra protection we put them in cardboard mailing tubes (purchased at a UPS store for a few dollars). We have never had to pay any extra luggage fees so it seems this bag is within the standard bag size to check in. My son's mitt always goes with him in the carry-on bag.
