I have a question. What does it mean that the boys made the high school program in 7th grade?

In SC a kid can tryout for JV/Varsity of the HS they are zoned for in 7th grade. I can't think of any 7th graders that ever made varsity, but I know of a couple 8th graders that played varsity ball, just not many. I did coach a boy last fall that made the HS Varsity Golf team as a 7th grader though.

Some high schools have JV/Varsity and "C" teams. Usually the 7th and 8th graders that make the HS programs play exclusively on the "C" teams. However the "C" team practices with the JV/Varsity. Some of the boys that are good enough from 7th and 8th grade will see some time with the JV as well. Other high schools only have JV/Varsity but carry expanded rosters to include a select few 7th and 8th graders.

The boys that I coached made both types of programs. Four of my boys made their HS JV teams and the rest attend schools with "C" teams. They all made their teams though. Smile We played up all fall in 14U & 15U and that gave the boys a lot of experience on the big fields and playing against older boys. I was a little apprehensive at first but it was the right call. They adjusted quickly and that gave them a lot of confidence at tryouts. Plus, I involved the HS coaches as much as possible last fall, letting them know when and where we were going to play. ...and they came! Smile

My son is zoned for a HS that has a "C" team with a strong baseball program and a great coaching staff. Their "C" team will play other HS in the area with "C" teams as well as Private School JV teams. They also have a JV Tournament on the schedule.

Back to coaching in summer ball?
Innocent Bystander

Nope. Down here, once you make the HS program they own you. They have a very involved summer program and schedule.

Rob,

Say "Hey!" to Chico and the gang from Boomer and me!! Smile
