In some areas, teams that just happen to be formed along the lines of HS teams will play a game or two during the week for a couple of months in the fall. A dad or two will coach the team. And as you pointed out, this still allows the players to participate with their select teams in weekend tourneys.
Where I have seen this, it seemed to be mostly the JV players and V bench players on the teams. Not all of the boys did select.
