Letter to attend a camp

My son is a 2016 graduate. He received a letter from an assistant baseball coach at a University. This letter was sent to my son through the school guidance counselor at his high school. The letter was requesting him to come to this camp coming up. I went to the web site the letter referenced and they want a lot of money for a 1 day camp. My question is, are these mass mailing type letters looking for money? Or could there be possible interest there from the University? It looked official and it was written to him. Any advice would be appreciated. We are new to this system. And not sure what to do. Thanks.
