Mechanics on Dropped 3rd Strike

Had a situation this past weekend.  During pre-game my partner and I discussed the dropped 3rd strike.  He points down if he sees it hit the ground.   Well it happened, I clearly had a drop - short hop clean pick.   Runner on second stealing 3rd  thrown out by a mile.  As PU, i do not verbalize the strike out and point down.  The FU - my partner after calling the out at 3rd... calls the batter runner out - ruling it was a clean catch.  Post game we discussed, I said I had a drop.. he was adamant it was a catch and that calling the play dead was the correct thing to do.   As he has many more years experience, I didn't argue the point, and there was no impact to the game (it was a blow out).  Was hoping to get other opinions on this forum as the replies and discussion are always informative.   If I were in the field, I would point if I saw a drop, but would not kill the play if I saw a catch and the plate saw a drop.  Thanks in advance for the assistance.
