Memphis Area?

I'd love to hear from HSBBWs who actually live or have kids at schools in the Memphis area. Folks seem to think the Nashville area is much safer than Memphis, particularly people from Nashville and the suburban Nashville area. Is this Memphis reputation earned? (Please support your viewpoint. Don't just say yes or no.)

BTW, I know it has been listed as the 3rd most crime-ridden in the US. But, when looking at crimetracker, it appears most of the violent crimes are related to domestic violence or confined to impoverished areas with high drug use/gangs. There appears to be a good deal of theft from vehicles or home burglaries in some areas. Not a lot of random violence... am I wrong?
