I was surprised that a ex big league catcher would miss that but then I started thinking that maybe the caught foul tip is different than a regular foul ball. Obviously if it was fouled off to the side on the ground, its a dead ball and the runner can't be picked off but what about on a caught foul tip which was only strike one. Was I wrong?

A foultip, by definition is a live ball strike.
