Over-officiating or good call

Kids lays down bunt down 1st base line. He is about 1 step from 1st when he gets plunked in the helmet by throw from pitcher. Literally, he had less then half his left foot that was in fair territory. Called out for interferences, I understand the rule but it was a bang,bang play and batter was going for the base (which is in fair territory).
