Paying tuition when offered a scholarship

Embarrassing question to ask but I don't know the answer and others may benefit from learning it.

When you are offered an athletic scholarship, how does the application of it and the coordination work with that when it's time to pay tuition?

Does the coach work with the admissions office to lower your tuition bill by the amount of the scholarship before you pay tuition? Or does it work another way?
