I'm reading a review copy of Pete Rose's soon to be released biography.

His HS story is interesting. He got cut from baseball his sophomore year. He was so pissed that he stopped going to school. As a result, he fluked sophomore year and had to repeat it. Upon returning, he made the baseball team. But, he couldn't play baseball in his senior year because he used up his 4 years of eligibility. So, no spring baseball for Pete as a senior. After school, he went to play in a summer league and destroyed their pitching. It was there that he got noticed and signed with the Reds.

Granted, this was a long time ago. But, could something remotely close to this happen today?
