Rose’s late teen years was towards the end of an era where scouts were signing players to next to nothing contracts off the sandlots like a sale at a one cent candy store. The minors went all the way down to the D level.
Today very little goes undetected. With Rose’s talent and grit today he would be asked to play for one of the top Ohio travel teams.
Rose not being a good athlete is a myth right up there with Jordan was cut from high school basketball. Rose became one of the greatest hitters of all time. He was all state in Ohio high school football. When Rose said he wasn’t a great athlete it was relative to the most athletic players in MLB baseball.
