I thought I understood it, but now I’m beginning to wonder.

If you start with a given number off the chart, why wouldn’t he get credit for an 8 pitch inning in the 1^st?

Have you tried to use your method in action? When I test something like that, I go to MLB.com and score a past game from the play by play.
