Question about the size of catchers

I have a friend who believes large catchers were sought by major league teams because their size would intimidate runners from trying to score due to fear of a collision. I realize the plate collision rule has changed and it may be a moot point. Do any of you have any insight on the large size of catchers and if the intimidation factored in?
