Why are you here trying to read tea-leaves when you can get the answer directly from the horse's mouth? How the heck do any of us know what those letters mean? Anybody claiming they do have no idea what they are talking about. Since they cannot call your son at this time, one method is to send a letter and see if they can get him to call.
The best advice I can give you is get way more aggressive. If a school of interest has sent you some correspondence by all means follow it to its logical conclusion. There may be a coach out there just dying to talk to your son. Call them and find out - without further delay.
