Reply to "References for programs"

Is it considered normal for a player or family to reach out to existing families about a program when being recruited? Is this how that is done?

I don't know if it is normal, but it certainly is wise.   This is a major financial $$ investment.  This is part of doing your due diligence on the program, coach, education experience and lot of other considerations.   Your son is making one of the biggest decisions of his young life.   I would talk to anybody who is willing to talk.  There are a handful of posters I spoke (and corresponded with) over the years on HSBBWeb about their experiences as student/athlete parents with a few of the schools my son was considering.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Best of luck!
