Santo was a type 1 diabetic or better known as juvenile diabetes, something I have first hand knowledge. He was diagnosed at age 18. The fact that he was able to play the game at such a high level, at the time, was truly an amazing feat. His ability to monitor his blood sugars was very limited due to a lack of technology, that has since occurred. Today, people can lead normal lives with type 1 diabetes, although careful monitoring of blood sugars must occur. Type 1 diabetes is often confused with the more prevalent type 2, and is very misunderstood.
My sincere condolences, as well, to the Santo family and all Cub fans.
