After game one (7 runs allowed) I was able to tell the boys that we needed to cut down on walks allowed and throw more strikes. In a normal circumstance, they'd have said "Duh, coach", BUT I was able to also tell them that even though we walked 11 batters, our opponent "weakly hit" 78% of the balls they put in play (just one of the many stats calculated by the software).
This got their attention!! Maybe not so "duh" eh, if we throw strikes, they hit the ball, but if they hit it "weakly" 78% of the time my defense can do the work!!
So after that talk, scrimmage #2 (4 runs allowed) as a team, 62% strikes thrown (calculated stat), 65% first pitch strikes (another calculated stat), and 85% "weak" hit balls with only 2 walks.
I'm not saying that one stat caused a team wide epiphany but it sure gives you the data and the tools to try to get their little light bulbs to go on and realize they don't have to strike every batter out.
