It shouldn't have had any effect on his competitiveness and confidence. He could have used the experience to learn composure. As my son's pitching coach tells his students, "Once the ball leaves your hand you don't have control over the situation anymore. You forget about the last pitch whether the ball is kicked by a fielder or goes over the fence. Sorry, but if your son can't do this he's not mentally ready for varsity.
If your son is on the JV or freshman team I suggest you keep your feelings to yourself.
