Yikes. I am glad your kid was able to wear it and play on. My kid has been on the other side of the hbp that resulted in uncommon injuries (top hand wrist injury, inside knee, etc) and missed time...worse yet he looks like the gform/evoshield poster boy during his PA and the ball still found its way to a joint.
