Literally, being a half-second too late or too early can cause a swing and a miss. But, maybe that goes back to swing path and staying on plane with the pitch longer?

Literally, it takes less than a half second for the ball to travel from the pitchers hand to the plate. A few hundredths of a second make all the difference.
