Congratulations on giving yourself such opportunities. You obviously understand the importance of commitment to team and there are not always clear rules for how to resolve conflicting considerations.

I like the advice you have been given. The only thing I'd add is that high school is a time when you should be experiencing many different things, so value that as one of the competing considerations. Also, some opportunities are harder to come by than others. Weigh them according to the way you value them, not according to how others may be asking you to weigh them.
