What would you do?

A friend who coaches asked for my advice. One of his two best pitchers (HS Varsity) announced that he and his family are going on a vacation for three weeks in May and will therefore miss the entire playoffs. This is after the kid heard everything about commitment, being at every game/practice, etc. I told him what I would do.
I'd like to hear what others would say.
