I guess all you have to do is ask rep Hull to submit legislation for you and he will. What an idiot! In the Northern part of the state, Id say put LB, WS, South County, and Woodson in the top four in any order you want. That district is just nasty. Madison could be a player this year in the region as well. I dont see anybody else being at the level of the Patriot teams though. McLean can probably beat anybody once with Sborz on the mound and ditto with Fairfax when Vanderplas pitches and Westfield with Hoover, but overall the Patriot teams are by far the best if you ask me. Woodbridge has...

I'd have to agree with vabaseball fan in large part. No doubt at all that the Patriot District will be the strongest in the State yet again this year. Whichever team emerges from that district will be the favorite for the Regions, and a strong contender for States. Also wouldn't be surprised if 2-3 of the final 4 Northern Regional teams will again be from Patriot District this year. SC is clearly the favorite in th edistrict with the overall talent, speed, power hitting, pitching, and...

Not doubting any of what you said here, but McLean lost a ton of talent. They do have Sborz, real good, and I heard they have another good pitcher transfer. What else is there? I hope you are right. Fairfax does have Vanderplas, and he is a horse, but what else do they have? Kuchel (sp) REALLY stepped up last year, but he is gone. Without those 2 FFX may not have won a game...and one of them is gone. Woodson may not be as strong offensively, but they can still hit and 4 very strong...

100% agreed, Dblemup. Both McLean and Fairfax will have to be carried by their strongest pitcher, which will possibly take them into Regionals. Also, I forgot to mention Westfield earlier -- they should be a force, too. My real point is that, as good as these teams may be, it's unlikely any of them (other than possibly Madison)would even make the district playoffs if they were in the Patriot District. But because of the district in which they play, they will likely make it to the Regionals.

McLean did have a transfer come in, Hunter. Havent seen the young man pitch, but I know he's a lefty and word is they think he's gonna be pretty tough. Hard to see where the runs are going to come from this year though after what they lost last year. Regardless, they'll play tough against top teams as will Fairfax and Westfield. Totally agree that to mention any of those three in the same breath as any of the Patriot teams would be a serious reach. Not even close. No other NR team someone...

I agree with your opinion that the Patriot will be extremely strong again this year. The Northern Region has established itself as a baseball factory and the flow of talent looks like it will be here for quite some time. I have had the good fortune of watching many of these players during off season workouts as they prepare for upcoming seasons. The dedication to the sport in this area continues to get stronger each year and it is exciting to see these young men move up through the ranks and...

Its true that traditionally the National never gets very far in regionals, but they did represent themselves well last year imo. Not only did W&L knock off Stone Bridge, but Yorktown took Fairfax to the brink as well, with Fairfax eventually winning a rain-shortened contest. Fairfax went on to take WS to extra innings in the next round and WS ended up being state champs. All Im saying is that there are years where the National district produces teams that can play with good teams from...

Yorktown playing Fairfax tough and Fairfax playing WS tough just means to me that the National didnt get embarrassed altogether last year, which we both seem to...

Vabaseballdad, you are right. 20-0 is one hell of a season. Its strange how much the PWC schools go unnoticed by the folks in Fairfax County (probably vice-versa I would think) since the schools are in different regions. Undefeated seasons dont happen often and it's a heck of an accomplishment in AAA Virginia baseball. Congrats to the Vikings. Hope to catch one of their games down the stretch.

Re: coaching rules in faifax county

I've always thought that if a coach was being paid voluntarily for his private services (ie coach not pressuring kids to pay for his services or risk repercussions for not doing so), and if that coach's services were available to the general public (and not just players from his school) that it was ok. I could be wrong, but that's what I've been told and thought to be true. By the way, the fact that it's Fairfax County is irrelevant. All VA public schools are governed by the same set of rules.

I hear you. I have my theories, but won't air them here. Too bad. Some real good kids, and real good players before they get out of little league. Most just are not that good up against solid HS competition...the same competition they did real well against while in LL. By looking at the Fairfax roster...3-4 very solid players (and 1 is injured now), but bottom end of the roster won't help at all. Again, just my opinion based on the ones I know.

That's my perception as well. As to your theories, I'd love to hear 'em, as I'm a bit puzzled, but you're correct - this isn't the place. FWIW, I've taught/worked with youth Basketball in NoVa, and I've seen the same thing happen there. Doubles, as to the Liberty District, I only know @ a couple of teams, but I can't see Fairfax doing much better.

I would think that there are going to be more wins out there for Fairfax playing a Liberty schedule than a Concorde schedule for sure, and I'd think Fairfax will be able to finish 5th or 6th in the Liberty. They should be a notch above the bottom-tier of the Liberty, but I don't see them being a threat to the usual teams at the top at this point.

Re: Northern Virginia Semis

vabaseballfan ·
This type of thinking is very logical and well-constructed, so obviously that's not the way the Northern Region does it. A site has to have two things before it is named a "neutral" host for NR tournament games: 1. Sites are almost always "centrally located". That basically means schools that are somewhere in the middle of Fairfax County. This is why you see Madison, Oakton, WTW, Lake Braddock, and Robinson as such common sites. There are sometimes exceptions to this rule (i.e. South County...

I definitely understand VABaseballFan's points and agree with them...I personally don't really care if the field is centrally located...Using an example, Stone Bridge will likely never host as a neutral site even though many in Fairfax would consider it easier to get to than South County... As far as Woodson's center field, I thought it was a little longer than that, but it is a 25' or 30' fence, so not quite as easy as it sounds. As far as ODU's field, going back to my previous example,...

I got a good laugh about your comment on GMU's "no locals" strategy, Swampie. Seems like you're on to something. As far as Woodson's fence in center field, 300' is obviously very short, even with a high fence. A lot of home runs and doubles that hit the fence on that field that would be flyouts on almost all other local HS fields. AS a result, I've always looked at Woodson players' stats with a bit of a wary eye. Good point as well on a field needing good sight lines along both sides of the...

Its out of the way but you would be hard pressed to find a nicer field than Fireman's Field in Purcellville. Not sure that I have ever heard anything negative about the field. I agree NOVABBall...Fireman's is probably one of the best fields in NOVA. I've seen several games there and other than the drive, I can't think of any negatives to using that field...But I know most of the Fairfax schools complain about coming to Stone Bridge, so I'm sure the extra drive past there would kill any chance of using it.
