Open reduction surgery for a separated growth plate in his elbow.
Just wondering if anybody has experienced this with their boys. He has been cleared to hit (soft toss & tee work) 13 weeks after surgery he says there is no pain just feels weird.... Would love to hear from anybody if they have any thoughts or first hand knowledge. Thanks

Throwing Elbow and Shoulder Pain.
Need some help. I have pain sometimes, well most of the times, in the areas that are marked in red. This is while i an playing and throwing a baseball. I am a catcher. I mostly have pain in the elbow most of the time if it hurts. Sometimes it hurts in the shoulder. Or sometimes both. What should I do? Please help and let me know if you know.

inner elbow pain 13 yr old
My son is 13 and is in the midst of an 8 week shut down due to little league elbow (medial epicondyle growth plate). This is the third time he has had to be shut down from throwing. The most recent shut down was about 2 years ago. We thought we had fully recovered from this the second time but apparently not. Who out here has dealt with this multiple times and when did it finally end and were there any lingering affects?

Partially Torn UCL right before senior year
Hey guys, After seeing two doctors, the second being Dr. Ciccotti (Phillies), I have been diagnosed with a partially torn UCL. I still have a dynamic ultrasound test next week to determine the severity of the tear but just wanted some opinions. I'm a pitcher going into my senior year of college. This past season is when I started dealing with elbow pain but I pitched through the season and took a couple weeks off to see how it was but the pain came back even worse a few weeks later after 2...

Osteochondritis Dissecans
I know that many of you have replied in the past about OCD. We are hoping for information, encouragement and answers to our 14 year old son's OCD. It presented itself in the trochlea as opposed to the Capitellum like many others. Has anyone else had OCD in the trochlea???? When he first experienced pain (we took x-rays and an MRI) he was not diagnosed with OCD. We took a conservative approach anyway by resting for 3 months, PT and then a slow throwing program to get him back on track.

Could be a pinched nerve. Your son may need to see a PT but first he needs to see an orthopedist ASAP.

Your son has severe and persistent pain in his arm. A medical doctor has the tools, training, and experience to diagnose what is causing the pain. The medical specialty most closely associated with this type of potential injury is Orthopedics. An MD who specializes in sports medicine may be of help, so that would be a good alternative, but he might end up asking for the orthopedist's opinion.

Sounds like a pinched nerve issue to me. Kind of like when you hit your "funny bone." I'll second the Orthopedist asap. Good luck.

+100 on the Orthopedist. I would look to an Orthopedic group that services the Pro, D1, or Semi-Pro teams in your area. My son's Orthopedist happens to be the team doctor for our local MLB team - pretty qualified to treat arm issues.

A good sports physical therapist would be my first stop. Mechanical issues at the elbow can irritate and entrap the nerves at the elbow. The poor old elbow will get beat up because of mechanical issues above and below the elbow. It isn't as simple as an "elbow injury" typically. The difference between a good sports physical therapist and a good orthopod, is that the orthopod will typically focus on the elbow only (which is his/her job) and focus on the "symptomatic" area (which is a needed...

If he has been having issues for this long, I would also offer that he may be doing something incorrect mechanically that is stressing his elbow. You may want to have his motion evaluated by someone other than his current pitching coach. I say that because if he does have some sort of mechanical fault - it is obviously something his current coach is not seeing. There are a couple of advertisers here that might be able to offer that type of service remotely.

Definetly sounds like ulnar nerve. I strongly suggest that you send him to an ortho before you do anything. Because you have let this go for a long period of time there may be damage to the nerve. The nerve sits in a groove in the elbow. Sometimes the nerve will not stay in the groove and slips in and out of the groove. This action causes irritation to the nerve. A test should be done to determine if the nerve is still viable. The doctor may also consider if there has been any other issue...

I believe Dr. Andrews is in Pensacola, which is a pretty good ways from Tampa, and he's scaled back his practice. But if the OP will call his office, or contact ASMI.ORG through through their website, I'm sure you'll be able to get a referral to a doctor in Tampa.

+1 to sowilson's post....ask who treats the Tampa Yankees guys, or UT players. I am dealing with a persistent groin injury with my 15 yr old....took him to the ortho group thats treats the Pirates guys yesterday....MRI is up next! Get him looked at sooner rather than later, don't put it off

Who treats the tampa yankees is the team doctor where ever he may be most likely in NY. Call Andrews office.

Dr Daniel Murphy, of the Tampa Orthopedics and Sports Medicine group, is the Team Dr for the NY Yankees and the Tampa Yankees...it may be worth checking into

The specialist is Dr Ahmed in NYC. He is the one AROD Let the buyer beware . Call Dr Andrews office for assistance. This is a youth player not a full grown adult. BTW doctors bid out for the rights to treat a teams players and you will find them in every city where the team has an affiliate. Mine got a bad diagnosis from the doc who treats the team he was on. He was not the team specialist. Just a suggestion but a doc affiliated with a team is not always the best. Why do u suppose most...

Interesting. FWIW, when I contacted ASMI for a referral for my son, Dr. Fleisig recommended the SF Giants orthopedist, who trained with Dr. Andrews.

Yes they will refer those they have trained with. Thats why I say call them. This is a youth player having elbow issues. So I would see who they may refer to in area. Keepin mind many of these team docs specialize in certain body parts. If my son is having elbow issues go to a guy who specializes in elbows. FYI when son was with the cardinals it took another doctor in NYC to diagnose his issue...rare cortacoid impingement...took 3 seasons of pain discomfort and dl and doc alchek got it right...

So I followed the advice and took my son in to see an Orthopedic Surgeon in Tampa. He took X-rays of both shoulders and deducted that the pain was due to "Little Leaguers Shoulder". My son has been asked to ice his arm at least 3 times a day and NOT do any throwing/pitching for at least 6 weeks, at which point we will see him again. Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. It was what made me take him to the doctor in the first place :-)

Glad you started the process, and have some direction. Six weeks is how long it takes the body to heal up. My concern is that in six weeks, you are still in the same boat, as nothing that caused the flair up (in the first place) has been corrected. Again, the Doc is treating the symptom only, the elbow pain, with this approach. Noting that it does need rest, and he is correct, and not cutting on him in any way what so ever. Highest respect for those docs. I am completely on board with that.

If the DR. is right and the treatment works you may have saved your son a ton of physical and emotional pain of a traumatic injury by simply asking the question. Good for you and for everyone here who jumped in to offer suggestions. Big part of the reason I spend some of what I consider to be my valuable time on this site.

Little League Shoulder is a growth plate issue. I quick google search shows recommendations of physical therapy during recovery. I would dig a little deeper. Good luck.

Is it possible the poster meant to say elbow and accidentally substituted shoulder? That would make more sense to me than a shoulder issue causing the elbow pain.

I have not gone and seen my doctor. Don't want to be done for the season. And the pain is not all the time when I throw. But i throw more times with pain then without.

I would strongly recommend seeing a doctor. Consistent pain when throwing indicates a problem. Your body is sending a message. Don't ignore it.

You definitely should seek medical attention. Do you have a trainer at school? At kids school they would get you evaluated by tye trainer first, then if necessary send you to the ortho. On the positive side, since you have pain in several locations it would seem like general irritation and inflammation. Not some thing catastrophic like ucl tear. Get it checked out and let the pros guide you. Good luck.

When it hurts, shut it down. You only have one throwing arm, when it's gone, so are you. Talk to your coach, athletic trainer, or doctor. Short term disruptions should not derail your long term plans, but they might if you wait too long.

Wesley, From following your posts, I know that you've been extremely dedicated and worked hard to earn an opportunity to play at the next level. You REALLY need to follow the advice given, even if it means that you need to rest (best case) and miss some or all of this season. This pain is significant enough to cause you concern. good news today, had a game. we won 11 to 10 and I did not have any arm pain today. It felt fine. I made sure to warm up well and I made sure to use my legs more and get back and use my whole body. Will let you all updated.

Did Dr Ciccotti talk to you about the "Primary Repair" technique? I have read that it significantly reduces rehab time, but the surgeon won't know for sure whether or not you're a candidate until the scope is in your elbow. Thanks! He didn't discuss surgery much since hes hoping I can rehab it but I'll bring it up to him at my follow up appointment in 2 weeks. Although if I have the surgery in August, 6-7 months recovery would bring me back during the first month of our season, it may be worth considering.

Based upon orthopedic advice, my son sat out 6 weeks at the end of his senior HS season. He then rehabbed from approx. May 20 thru July 10. Got to college, nothing hurt, per se but his velocity was down 3-4 MPH and then slowly dropped further until he called and said elbow was hurting again. Had to have TJ surgery. Was told PRP would make it feel better but that in the Ortho's opinion (Kremchek), it was a short term fix and son would be right back in 5-6 month needing TJ surgery. He elected...

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's exactly what I don't want to happen and it adds on to the similar stories I've heard. Obviously I wont make any final decisions until I see my doctor again and discuss with him but I'm leaning towards surgery because with grad school as an option it seems to give me the best chance to play my 4th year.
