D3 Scholarships?

I have a tough situation here. I believe I'm good enough to get looks by some division 3 programmes since I have decent grades and have some tools. Problem is I'm not a citizen of United States and I won't be able to do student loans or any sort of...

Batters Box Problem

NewBallCoach ·
We have very good batters boxes they are very hard and we take care of them routinely to keep them in shape. The last 3 games we have had at home the opposing team has dug them out when they got in the box, after the last team visiting we had to fill in 2 holes that were about 6 inches deep and their pitcher destroyed our mound by digging it out. Anyway we have some rubber mats left over from our weight room that are usually in our dugout and I am thinking of burying one of them our RH...

Blocking Problem

Wesleythecacther ·
I have a problem blocking the ball during the game sometimes. I have been told by my coaches that when I block I jump up instead of dropping straight down. I am good at blocking during drills, its just that during the game I have trouble sometimes. Here is a link of me blocking when I took a lesson a couple months back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho09idIZea4

Do you have any game film? That will help more than watching your videos because that's where you're messing up. Couple of observations 1. You have heavy feet - I would suggest getting a jump rope and learn to do all the boxing shuffles. Get on a good dot program to work more agility with your feet. Not sure if you want to do this one but I feel that it helped me tremendously was play offensive line for football. All the drills we did for footwork on moving people in tight spaces made me...

Thank you, I will work on my feet. Don't pay attention to the BF video that was taken a year ago, I ha begotten better. I will try to get game video soon and more video of me catching. When you say to not show the pic ther my chest and just show head and shoulders, what do you mean by that? And I did notice that in the lesson the balls weren't hiring my chest, I will get more video of me catching sometime soon hopefully once high school is over. Thanks for the rely and advice.

Yeah you can tell you got better in the second video compared to the first video. One thing I forgot to put that I did see in the BF video is you need to get on top of the throw more. You have a slight drop / sidearm throw. As for the pitcher seeing your chest I tried to find some pictures but Google hates me. Imagine this - in the runners on position you want your butt up higher. Think of sitting on a short stool with the edge of your butt but your bent at the waist. This allows the ump to...

Okay, thank you. I did now change to having two stances, I always did have them, just in the BF visor I hadn't caught in months, I was playing first on varsity my sophomore year, and my throws to second have gotten better, you'll see when I get more video

Agree with coach... you need to work on quick, quick, quick. We work our catchers with rapid fire blocking so they are drop blocking (leaving the ball where the chest protector blocked it to) then quickly pouncing back into ready position for another rep. We'll hold a broom on top of their helmet during drop so they can feel if they have any/too much lift. This rapid fire drill also helps speed them up with retrieving the ball after blocking. I, too, believe the slow feet contribute to the...

Totally agree with Cabbage on everything but him talking about attacking the ball and being athletic when picking it up reminded me of something. What I teach my guys is to do everything he said is to put their nose over the ball. This will force the athletic stance and keep you from taking shortcuts by trying to reach for the ball. Something I tell all my fielders is quick - slow - quick which means quick to the ball - slow to field it - quick to get rid of it. Only way to do this is to be...

You look MUCH better in that video than the other ones. I especially like the adjustment you made with your trigger in moving to a more gentle landing / heel lift versus the stomp. Hard to tell but I think you have some power and I like the swing because it looks like you generate some good bat speed. One thing I did notice is that on 1 or 2 swings you hands go too far back on your trigger. Imagine pulling the string back on a bow and arrow and your hands doing that before you commit to the...

Thank you! I am starting my summer season soon, so I will get video then. And as for my swing, I understand what you mean by my hands going too far back, I believe that occurs sometimes because when I was taught by my uncle about my load, he had me over-emphasize my load so I would feel it, I just have to make that adjustment. And I do it for some power, last summer I had a homerun (the only one on the team to hit one).

On a related note, our high school does a good job of maintaining the pitcher's mound filling in any ruts with a "special" mix, then tamping down. I think it is just slightly moistened clay (kept in airtight pail) but never wanted to ask the coach directly. Also, are there any rules which restrict or prohibit messing up the box or the mound or any restrictions about mid-game "repairs"? I can't believe an ump would allow a 6 inch rut to be dug out. We've got a turf box so no such problems.

If you are using the right clay mix (or clay bricks), moisture and tamping, you should be able to create a base that is very difficult to dig too far into. Frequent re-application is necessary. Regarding your idea of rubber mats, there are actually products sold that are, I believe, rubber that are designed for just what you are talking about. It is not solid, though. I think it is like a honeycomb grid configuration where dirt fills in the openings throughout. I couldn't find on a quick...

One of the locations where we played in a spring break tourney was formerly a D1 college stadium, now run by the city. The setting and grass conditions were very good and from a distance, everything looked ideal. But they did not use any clay for mound or plate. Holes were enormous and it had a significant effect on pitchers and hitters.

NBC, Just get a bigger drill bit and drill a ton of holes in your mat before installig. Its just about the draingage.

Thanks for the info. From what I have noticed the teams that are digging the holes are the same teams whose fields are in less than great shape, so maybe that's what they are use to doing. Either way to me it's ridiculous, I don't know why they would want to dig and hit out of a hole.

Those mats look like a great product. What we did back in the late 50’s and 60’s was use bricks on both the mounds and batter’s boxes. In fact, we just set up a mound with bricks last year and it’s held up magnificently. One of the biggest mistakes is filling in the holes and then trying to pack it. It will pack, but not very tightly. In order to do get it to pack well, the soil has to be moistened.

Be careful that the mat is deep enough that a player can't catch his cleat in it. My son's batting coach has always been careful of cleats on mats. He has seen players catch a cleat when they go to turn their foot and tear something. As least dirt gives.

At our HS the booster club paid for and installed a circular mat that was about the diameter of the home plate area. Similar to the Jox Box mats MidAtlanticDad post links for. The mat is buried about 6" deep. No problems with any batter digging for China.

Teach your hitters never to stand in the same place as the previous hitters. Teach you hitters if the right side is below grade to move dirt from the back of the box to fill the hole. A good smart hitter needs the "Back side" higher than the front. This will prevent a "premature" upper cut. This is one of the 6 Tools and discussions with Eric Davis and Edgar Martinez. Hello, Call the school that you are interested in and try to set up a school visit, you will be able to meet with the admin group and also talk to the coach when you visit. There are only academic scholarships in D3 level no sport scholarships. Good luck,

Good luck, this is true, however, there is also some academic money out there for players who would not have gotten it if they didn't play...bottom line is you still need to be a good student.

May I ask why you limited your question to DIII? DII schools offer athletic scholarships, and junior colleges are typically much less expensive than DIII.

I know that the school my son attends prides itself on diversity. There are Scholarships targeted at international students. For instance I did a search, for scholarships on the Web site of my sons school and came up with this. http://choose.owu.edu/financia...onalScholarships.php I am sure this school is not the only one to offer scholarships to international students. I believe the deadlines are different as well. You may want to narrow your search to the schools you know offer...

As with anything in life you will get what you put into it. While I consider myself an advocate of D3 schools, you can get a great education going many routes. Junior college is a great option, and cost effective. If you have the drive to learn, you can get a great education anywhere. I know people who did not go to college yet they still feel they got a great education, in the working world.

Are you planning to enter college in the fall of 2015? If so, some of that scholarship money is already spoken for. As with athletics, I think you'll also find some overlap in academic distinction between DII and DIII colleges. But as others have advised, a "great education" means different things to different people. What does "great education" mean to you? High paying job after undergrad? Impressive diploma? Great resume for graduate school? Intellectual challenge? Think carefully about...
