MLB All Star Game Antics
Ok, I know this is not that important, but I actually turned the ASG off in the 7th inning the other night. Man, it was a snooze-fest. ncaa and draft
Wonder if a redshirt sophomore (currently draft eligible) with 2 more years of NCAA eligibility that is being hold back his full potential to play more innings because coaches hope to play him for another 2 years (senior plus grad school) vs being drafted? How coaches promote players to the MLB scouts? Or do they? Does this affect on how scouts may be looking at his potential as a possible draftee?

Pitchout Play Rarely Called
There are multiple scenarios in baseball that call for certain strategies. The pitchout play being one of them. Whether I am watching MLB or youth and HS baseball, I just do not see the pitch out being executed. Some folks say they don't run as much as they used to in MLB, which is true. Sometimes they say HS and youth pitchers are not able to perform the task at hand. In my opinion it's not really an issue in MLB. You could probably watch about 10 games and see them pitchout in 1, maybe 2...

When is it common to start seeing scouts at games. In other words, are many of scouts in warmer weather during February at Spring training games. Starting to head to College games closer to draft time? How do scouts decide who they are going to see ?...

The recent thread on 11.7 scholarships got me wondering if there is an alternative path for some kids. What if a kid was un-drafted, or didn't like his draft position. Could he work out on his own outside of any type of college and then be draft eligible? (Not relevant to anyone I know, just wondering if the dissatisfaction with the current model could ultimately lead to an alternative.)

Aside from how one's passion plays a big roll in such this decision, "money" tends to be the biggest factor involved in the decision. It often comes down to scholarship money vs. bonus money. If no money is offered for college or going pro, then the perceived value of the college offer vs. the pro offer will be dominate. I'd say in most cases, it's a combination of both the amount of money offered and value of what the college offers.

College coaches (and HS coaches) are very important in the scouting process. Coaches will keep the area scouts up to speed on what the coaches think are pro-potential players. (Of course, if the coach cries wolf, they lose the trust of the area scout.) Scouting is a winnowing (filtering) and ranking process. While scouts are actively scouting during the fall and spring pre-season, we are now in the part of the season where the area scout (and his unpaid associate scouts) runs around watching...

Thanks for the info. The conversation came up because one of the pitchers On the team had lots of scouts last year at games. He didn't have a great season and wasn't drafted. However this season is pitching really well and there has only been one scout filming him. May be just early in the season ? He is lhp throwing mid 90's.

I love this site and and gotten all sorts of great information. That said, I think you will not get very "accurate" answers as our question is probably just too situational. You may get some ideas, but it could almost be like stirring the pot. Probably the best thing to do is for this kid to do some asking around and try to understand the landscape. Have others been drafted out of the program? Does the program have an actual pro day? The more important questions might be whether this kid has...

Yes usually 5-8 draftees every year. And yes they had a scout day back in the fall of 17. He has few requests. In our case, he can graduate in the fall18 (only needs 4 more credits). BUT ... he has 2 more years to play... I will think that coaches will take advantage of it by not promoting him to the scouts. Another question is how scouts are getting players email address/phone? I believe through coaches..Just trying to understand how it all works...it is very nerve breaking not knowing or...

Every situation is unique. But coaches like their players to go to the next level. It’s good PR for recruiting. 84% of American MLBers come from the first ten rounds. Another 10% come from rounds 11-20. Everyone else is mostly likely to be Single A roster filler for a couple of years. Pitchers drafted later have a better shot than position players. Velocity is an easy measurable. It’s important to figure out where you fit versus staying in school, enjoying college ball for a couple more...

He is a freebee no scholarship (long story transfer from one scholarship to none)...2 more years to play..he is junior...Why would coaches want him to go?

It has nothing to do with coaches wanting him to go, but rather teams wanting to draft him. At this point he sounds like if drafted he would be a late round sign, which means a small bonus. I say this as you have not mentioned anything about his skills. If your son has eligibility left more than likely it would serve him best to remain where he is and take some post grad classes. At this point why not just sit back and enjoy whats left of the season. Best of luck to your son.

Not trying to start an argument and don't mean to sound harsh, but unless your son's team is winning 85% of their games and in first place in their league, I really doubt a coach is "holding him back" with regard to innings in order to keep him around. Coaches want to win....and that means playing the kids that give them the best chance to win. Again, if he's on a Top 10 team...and they are doing fine without him, I could see it, but the team is anything less than that, I really doubt that...

Here's a little more food for thought... Take a look back at the last 5 or so years that had players drafted from his school...Where are they now...5 yrs later? Just because they "get drafted" doesn't mean they have what it takes to progress level to level or, more importantly, that they still have what a particular team NEEDS at the moment...Remember, most of these kids are fillers for a teams high $$ investment players...the "prospects"... Unless players are making marked improvement...

There are 30 MLB clubs which employ area scouts who have a single job: identify players - in their area -who have at least one single MLB potential tool and sell that player to his organization. A scout who doesn't identify the talent in his area will not be employed long (and to extend the area scout's reach, the scout will develop a network of coaches [travel, HS, CC and college] and associate scouts who scour the area looking, looking, looking). (And scouts get a little bit of extra money...

Total college bust drafted in 5th round, now in majors. He went from not getting on the mound to transferring and horrible numbers (6.52 era, 1.76 whip). But he had a high velocity fastball. http://www.thebaseballcube.com...rofile.asp?ID=144198

We currently have Confirmed Rutgers, Mount St. Mary’s, Lasalle, Clarion, Goldey Beacom, Coppin State, Lincoln University, Southern New Hampshire Univ, Chesnut Hill College, Piedmont International University, Philadelphia University/Thomas Jefferson Univ. Widener University, Virginia Tech hasn’t been confirmed yet and a few MLB Organizations represented (Phillies, Nationals, Brewers Blue Jays) as of now anymore questions you can go to our website...

Give it a rest... If you find 10 bombs in a game off of guys throwing 97+ boring, nobody can help you... Harper was fan-voted in (deservedly so, IMHO), just like all of the other starters... His BA is low, but he's 23 bombs and 54 RBIs... Also leads the the league with 78 walks... Major production. MLB is trying to appeal to a younger audience, which I applaud... Still a great show for us old-farts too!

Not this old fart...found it pretty boring, I'm not a huge fan of the long ball because it takes all the strategy out of the game. Guess 97+ MPH doesn't mean jack if everyone is putting it the bleachers, eh? I found the ASG more interesting to watch when there was something on the line, like home field advantage in the WS. Then there was something to play for. And I don't have to give it a rest...

No need to give it a rest. There is a legit discussion to be had about the long term health of the game and how it's going to be played going forward to ensure its survival. There's a lot to be chewed over in a lot of places, and a lot of valid viewpoints, IMO. For example, this old fart far prefers NL rules; others make a good case for the DH. Was never a fan of him either, JCG, but the concept compelled me to watch the game, because suddenly it mattered. That guy also added the extra wildcard team/game into the playoff picture too, which adds a lot of excitement and intrigue at the end of the season IMO.

If you are not into a sport, you may watch the finals, championship, majors, big rivalry or highlights but you are probably not going to watch an all-star game. But if you are into the sport, you will have some level of intrigue in seeing a gathering of the very best players in that sport, playing against each other. I totally enjoyed the game this year. It's nice to see players be able to have fun and enjoy the moment. The MLB All Star Game is still a competitive event unlike the NBA, NHL or NFL. Pitchers can't just come out and go through the motions and the hitters have to be focused.

Problem is at the youth level pitch outs often don't really give the catcher a chance if the pitcher is too slow plus going down 1-0 increases the chance of a walk at the youth level because pitchers don't have good control.

Travel programs won't use them. Player's don't get recruited for pitch outs, travel teams won't work on them.

True, there are very few pitchouts in HS baseball, but you may not be aware that HS teams will sometimes do what I call a "pitch-in"--that is, in an offspeed stealing count (usually 1-2), they'll cross up the offensive team by quick-pitching a fastball up-and-away, etc.

The only way to truly master the pitchout is to make it part of standard in-game procedure. We realized that when done in simulated circumstances, it becomes more akin to simply playing catch and our players cannot maintain the proper level of concentration. To combat this, we always call a pitchout when the count is 0-2 at any time or circumstance in the first three innings. This ensures maximum concentration and also lets the other team know that it's part of our arsenal.

MDS1 I concur with you...You used the word " standard ", and that's exactly what coaches should do, set standards. Standards are a belief in philosophy for players to go by. Your program uses this play, everyone who is involved in this play will learn it. Standards are not optional, they are for everybody. It's a great example of organized baseball, coach.
