NCAA recruiting and transfer updates

Rick at Informed Athlete ·
I was able to listen to a conference call recorded yesterday afternoon in which NCAA Division I representatives provided updates and answered questions for a group of Division I athletic directors and conference commissioners. Based on input from the NCAA’s Chief Medical Officer and the NCAA COVID-19 Advisory Panel, we can expect that the current NCAA “Dead Period” prohibiting in-person recruiting activity will be extended beyond the current imposed date of April 15. We should learn more...

NCAA Eligibility Center and Institutional Request List (IRL)

TheToolMan ·
Over the weekend the NCAA Eligibility Center requested transcripts and ACT scores for my son. Their website states that certification does not start until an NCAA school request it. Does this mean that a college/university is interested in him and have put him on their Institutional Request List (IRL)? Also, is it possible to find out what college/university made the request, if that is the case?

Wonder if a redshirt sophomore (currently draft eligible) with 2 more years of NCAA eligibility that is being hold back his full potential to play more innings because coaches hope to play him for another 2 years (senior plus grad school) vs being drafted? How coaches promote players to the MLB scouts? Or do they? Does this affect on how scouts may be looking at his potential as a possible draftee?

NCAA Division I Contact Period begins today

Rick at Informed Athlete ·
Just a reminder - after having been in a Quiet or Dead recruiting period since Nov. 6, NCAA Division I baseball coaches enter a Contact Period today that continues until almost the end of August. Face-to-face off-campus contact will be permissible for Division I coaches with 2018 HS grads and their families or legal guardians. The only exception to that is a four-day "Dead Period" from April 9-12 (no face-to-face contact at any location) in conjunction with the opening of the Spring NLI...

IRL

BaseballParent23 ·
Can someone please clarify for me how a player gets his name onto this list? We were reading up on the NCAA webside about this IRL, it's not clear if a player must get registered for each school of interest on the IRL or just one school can register a player for the IRL and then he's good to go for all schools (?). This is very confusing to me and seems some changes were made starting this year. Thanks in advance.

Re: IRL

2017LHPscrewball ·
I think the IRL is the school's reporting and they will put a kid on the list when/if they wish to have the NCAA review eligibility. This is different than the player registering with the NCAA eligibility center and getting an initial read on eligibility for the various divisions. Does that make sense given what you have read and what you are trying to accomplish?

Re: IRL

2016lhp18 ·
Your student athlete can register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and complete the questionnaire on eligibility. The athlete will receive a clearing house ID number. Once your student athlete graduates they will request for the final transcript from the High School. The HC or RC will will then request the information from the NCAA for you student athlete information to determine eligibility.. That's how I remember the process. I hope this helps!

Thank you for your responses. The NCAA Eligibility page that explains the IRL doesn't make it very clear except that there were changes that took place in 2016. I imagine when someone is really interested in a player it will all unfold in the right order. I hope.

It's permissible for college baseball coaches at all levels other than Division I. Division I coaches aren't permitted to have off-campus face-to-face contact with 2019's until July 1.

I love this site and and gotten all sorts of great information. That said, I think you will not get very "accurate" answers as our question is probably just too situational. You may get some ideas, but it could almost be like stirring the pot. Probably the best thing to do is for this kid to do some asking around and try to understand the landscape. Have others been drafted out of the program? Does the program have an actual pro day? The more important questions might be whether this kid has...

Yes usually 5-8 draftees every year. And yes they had a scout day back in the fall of 17. He has few requests. In our case, he can graduate in the fall18 (only needs 4 more credits). BUT ... he has 2 more years to play... I will think that coaches will take advantage of it by not promoting him to the scouts. Another question is how scouts are getting players email address/phone? I believe through coaches..Just trying to understand how it all works...it is very nerve breaking not knowing or...

Every situation is unique. But coaches like their players to go to the next level. It’s good PR for recruiting. 84% of American MLBers come from the first ten rounds. Another 10% come from rounds 11-20. Everyone else is mostly likely to be Single A roster filler for a couple of years. Pitchers drafted later have a better shot than position players. Velocity is an easy measurable. It’s important to figure out where you fit versus staying in school, enjoying college ball for a couple more...

Re: ncaa and draft

TPM ·
It has nothing to do with coaches wanting him to go, but rather teams wanting to draft him. At this point he sounds like if drafted he would be a late round sign, which means a small bonus. I say this as you have not mentioned anything about his skills. If your son has eligibility left more than likely it would serve him best to remain where he is and take some post grad classes. At this point why not just sit back and enjoy whats left of the season. Best of luck to your son.

Buckeye 2015 ·
Not trying to start an argument and don't mean to sound harsh, but unless your son's team is winning 85% of their games and in first place in their league, I really doubt a coach is "holding him back" with regard to innings in order to keep him around. Coaches want to win....and that means playing the kids that give them the best chance to win. Again, if he's on a Top 10 team...and they are doing fine without him, I could see it, but the team is anything less than that, I really doubt that...

Here's a little more food for thought... Take a look back at the last 5 or so years that had players drafted from his school...Where are they now...5 yrs later? Just because they "get drafted" doesn't mean they have what it takes to progress level to level or, more importantly, that they still have what a particular team NEEDS at the moment...Remember, most of these kids are fillers for a teams high $$ investment players...the "prospects"... Unless players are making marked improvement...

There are 30 MLB clubs which employ area scouts who have a single job: identify players - in their area -who have at least one single MLB potential tool and sell that player to his organization. A scout who doesn't identify the talent in his area will not be employed long (and to extend the area scout's reach, the scout will develop a network of coaches [travel, HS, CC and college] and associate scouts who scour the area looking, looking, looking). (And scouts get a little bit of extra money...

Definitely D1 dominates, as anyone would expect. But it's refreshing to see that there was a decent sprinkling of D2 and D3 guys here and there throughout the rosters of the 10 playoff teams. There is real college baseball being played at both the top of D2 and the top of D3.

Re: NCAA recruiting and transfer updates

Rick at Informed Athlete ·
Bob, I'm not aware of that topic being considered for Division I baseball. Obviously, Division I baseball has a 35-man roster limit. However in D2 and 3 baseball as well as other sports, they don't have restricted roster sizes so they're allowed to have freshman or JV teams if they choose to do so. Two specific examples I've been made aware of are an Ivy League school that had a JV football team in the 2018 season and a JV basketball team this year at a D2 college that actually shows 56...

Rick; thank you. With the increase # of Juniors and Seniors remaining in College with athletic eligibility, specific programs may desire to create a JV or Freshman Baseball team as a "Farm team" to evaluate players on a daily basis. Intra-Squad games and games with JC could be scheduled. Bob

The transfer portal isn't available for viewing by the public. By the way, when you see bloggers and others who write about sports providing information on which athletes or how many are in the portal (such as high profile athletes in football or basketball) they are either being given that information by the athlete or somebody closely associated with the athlete, or a coach at an NCAA school is giving that blogger their login and password. For what it's worth, I've never viewed information...

Re: NCAA Eligibility Center and Institutional Request List (IRL)

I don't think that is the case. What they seem to be telling you is the certification process really doesn't start until there is a NCAA school looking for certification for a player. I don't remember this when my son went through the process. My son played JuCO (NJCAA) for two years so the NCAA certification was not required. When he did get an offer from a NCAA D2 university, it was then the coach told us to start the process and we had to forward his id# to him.

Re: NCAA Eligibility Center and Institutional Request List (IRL)

Rick at Informed Athlete ·
FoxDad is correct. The Eligibility Center sends out their task list items for recruits to submit transcripts and test scores, but won't actually "pull the file" and review it until a recruit's name is submitted by a university on their IRL.

Re: If an incoming junior opts for a gap year, does he retain the three years of eligibility granted by the NCAA during this C19 time?

Gov ·
Was thinking same Adbono... figured I’d gather thoughts before reaching out to Rick. Thought though.... if a lot of schools cancel the 20/21 season the NCAA may say 6 to play 4 if a player was affected due to year of cancellation w start of COVID. Way ahead of myself here, but my kid prompting some thinking. His bud playing Princeton LAX said they are considering canceling 20/21. With LAX, Princeton is a powerhouse D1.
