Re: UMW
UMW is making a rapid rise in its reputation for academics and the caliber of its students. Most people do not realize that its incoming freshman classes have average SAT scores that are the third highest in VA, behind only William & Mary and UVA -- higher than Va. Tech or Madison, and all others too. It is a relatively small school, about 4,000 students I think. It has a very comfortable, small college/college town feel. You will not see the great abundance of frills and facilities that...

congrats to all of those boys.....they're great ball players, good kids and definately will be on one of the best baseball teams this coming spring in the Washington DC metropolitan area. St. Johns plays in the WCAC or otherwise known as the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, simply one of the best baseball conferences historically in the region, but they will definately face some good competition in their own conference. Paul VI High School in Fairfax Va, also plays in the WCAC and...

Re: Will Being a Walk-On Ever Be the Same Again?
Plus there are lots of other variables. As TPM taught me some time back, 11.7 doesn't always mean 11.7. The NCAA takes an average cost of attending, multiplies that by 11.7 and gives the team a $ budget to work with. If a state university gives an in-state guy 50%, then he's getting money equal to 50% of the in-state cost, but that is less than 50% of the AVERAGE cost of attending. So a team that focuses on in-state guys can milk far more out of its 11.7 allotment. There are sometimes...

We were very impressed with Greg Bauer at Wake Forest. He's just in his second year but that's who we decided to cast our lot with. He is not a cookie cutter guy, but rather someone who looks for a variety of styles to develop guys with roles to use in different situations. Maryland has Jim Farr, who used to be the head at William & Mary, where he put a surprising number of guys into the pros, including O's closer Chris Ray and former first rounder Bill Bray. Farr was a MLB guy himself.

Re: Off-season movie recommendations
Sahara is a great movie starring Matthew McCaunghey, Steve Zaun, Penelope Cruz and William H. Macy. It's a hilarious action adventure about two guys (MM and SZ) who are trying to find a Civil War ironclad in the Sahara desert that went up the Niger River while a DR is trying to find out why people in Africa are dying of a plague. I know it sounds crazy but it's great and funny. It's based on novels by Clive Cussler and because of this movie I have read almost all of his novels. I know that...

I had a neighbor who had been stationed in Italy. On Christmas Eve night, she and her children rang our door bell and handed us a beautiful plate of warm pizelles, lightly dusted with powdered sugar. They were set on a simple red glass plate ( which I later found out came from Walmart,...who woulda' thunk? ) and had a single twig of holly berry placed in the middle. The cookies looked lacey and fancy,....and the presentation was simple, yet gorgeous! She later showed me that they are as easy...

There's also TPX in NH and another at Northeastern. Check with All-Star (ASBA) and Arsenal to see if they have anything or can point you towards any situations.

Re: Selective Colleges
Yes, welcome to the funhouse or Nirvana as the case may be in trying to find all of these characteristics in one school that is a perfect fit. This is one of the big reasons this recruiting process takes so long. Especially the MONEY aspect as you could be paying more for out of state tuition for a warm climate state school (CT wasn't warm when I lived there)or even more expensive private school. A few more schools I would add to the "good" baseball/very good education/warmer climate are...

Re: If my son could play at......
I'll be a bit different here, and I have a bias. If your son becomes interested in D III's, Virginia has a number of excellent schools with very good baseball programs. My bias is where my sons attended, Christopher Newport University. Academically, the incoming freshman class SAT/GPA ranks only below UVA and William and Mary in the state, and we have lots of great schools. Baseball-wise, a very good program, a coach we thought the world of, with facilities very few D III's can match. It's...

Great young men! They, along with my son, played for the Prince William Express. Good organization that wanted to make sure their kids were able to play at the next level -- high school -- every player made their high school team the year my son enter high school. They also taught leadership and teamwork. I think Woodbridge has just shown exactly that. CONGRATULATIONS!! Good luck at Regionals and beyond.

Re: 17u travel/showcase teams in nova
Traveling to look at colleges can be expensive even for students who are not athletes. Why not kill two birds with one stone and look at colleges while playing baseball? Some of the showcase teams mentioned (Canes, Braves) will play at 20+ colleges during the course of one year. The baseball player is given the opportunity to not only look at the baseball facilities during a showcase weekend but also the opportunity to look at the college in general, and a wide variety of colleges at that.

Re: Division 3 time frame?
I'm not too sure what all of the NCAA rules are but they recruit all year round. The big thing would be to make sure you got your application in before the deadline. Colleges in the northeast normally start their practices in mid Jan so they are much busier once that starts. But what a lot of coaches will do is send out one of the assistance to watch you play. Have you looked at NJAC schools by any chance? Kean, TCNJ, Rowan, Montclair, William Paterson? These are historically some of the top...
