Re: Advice On Transferring After/ During Freshman Year

PABaseball ·
If you're not a pro prospect the goal is to get an education at the lowest possible cost. You're going to school for free. Baseball is great, but most kids are using it as a means to reduce the cost of college and play a few more years. If you had a 10% scholarship I would be giving different advice, but I would have a very hard time walking away from a free education. It sounds like you will be in a decent position on the depth chart once the seniors leave. I'd stick it out, especially with...

Assuming you and your family are okay with you walking away from an academic scholarship then you may want to see if you are a fit for a JUCO. Probably a tough task at this point but if your coaches don't have an opportunity for you they may assist you in finding a landing spot that works for you. Many coaches seem to have relationships with specific JUCOs. They may be okay with assisting you to land at a JUCO then recruit you later if you are a fit and bridges are not burned. There are many...

I think that Rick did a super job of explaining about the "quirk". Thank you Rick! I am sure that, coaches from the Midwest that are familiar with the Missouri Valley Conference know that DBU is in a D2 that plays in a D1 conference. I wouldn't necessarily think that those from other regions might be familiar and I will assume a few folks here wouldn't know that either.

Re: NCAA Transfer Portal "quirk"

LaunchAngle ·
My thought with DBU is that D1 coaches are only looking at other D1 players in the portal..so if DBU players are listed as D2 they could very well not even be seen by other D1 coaches...it would not seem odd to any D1 coach that there are no DBU players in the portal...I am guessing the portal can be filtered by division for the coaches looking...

Granted, I am a nobody and there may be people here that aren't familiar with DBU like myself, but check this out. Number 5 in wins over the last 7 years? I think it's fair to question how knowledgeable some of these D1 coaches are. So maybe a coach filtered D2 out of their spreadsheet. But I'd think any D1 coach worth his salt would find it conspicuously odd that DBU players are never on their spreadsheet. We all know how small the college baseball coaching world is, right? Everyone talks...

NCAA Transfer Portal "quirk"

Rick at Informed Athlete ·
I was just made aware of a "quirk" regarding the Transfer Portal and thought I would share for whatever it's worth. An athlete transferring from a multi-divisional athletic program will be shown in the Transfer Portal as a transfer from the level for which the overall athletic program is known. Example: With Dallas Baptist being a D2 program in all sports other than baseball, a baseball player from DBU who enters the Transfer Portal will be listed as transferring from a D2 baseball program!

Re: NCAA Transfer Portal "quirk"

DanJ ·
Well, this is interesting. Dallas Baptist is a D1 baseball program who just won 34 games this season. Beat a bunch of ranked teams along the way. From 2014 to 2019, they won AT LEAST 40 games each season. Admittedly, I don't know much of anything about them (just looked all this up), but clearly they're no bottom feeder D1 program. Far from it, in fact. So the question is why? Why are portal kids from there only getting inquiries from D2 and D3 programs? Is it because times are really tough...

Warning/Reminder as College Fall classes start

Rick at Informed Athlete ·
We've received too many calls/emails over the past week or so similar to this general scenario: Athlete (baseball, softball, football, etc. and often, but not always, a walk-on) arrives on campus and classes have started or getting ready to start. At the last minute, they're told "you won't be able to be eligible this year." "You don't have the necessary 16 core courses." OR "You don't have enough transferable hours from the JUCO to meet the transfer requirements." Try to prevent your...

Transferring from D1 to D3

bossdude12 ·
Hey everyone, I am currently a senior at a division one school. I have had limited playing time at the school and am searching for a better fit for me. However, I am also looking to get into a better school. I have a 3.8 GPA and have had internships and other experiences to boost my resume. However, the school I am currently at does not offer the post-grad opportunities I am looking for. With that, I was wondering if it is possible that I could transfer to a top D3 grad school. I have two...

Look into The University of Texas - Dallas. It’s a high academic public university that offers a number of respected grad programs. Especially in the fields of engineering and business. They also play very good D3 baseball. For the past two years their second baseman was a grad transfer from Cornell.

It's definitely possible, and you should go for it if you want to keep playing. For specifics on the mechanics of transferring, you should contact Rick at Informed Athlete. He's an expert in NCAA transfer rules - they are quite complex. This is not something message board posters will be able to help you with. Rick charges about $175 for a consultation, so be sure to come with questions in hand in order to get your money's worth. He can walk you through what you'll need to do and offer a...

Northeast gives you quite a few great options for strong (academic) D3s. Southeast has a lot more mid-majors along with the bigger D1 programs. I sent a PM. So much depends on position, where you are transferring from, etc. Not matter what, I love what you are thinking in terms of making a good academic decision as well as hopefully getting some more opportunities to play. Good luck!!

Eastern Connecticut State, which won the D3 College World Series this year, had at least 10 players who were transfers, mostly from D2 or D1 schools. You can look at rosters of schools that are of interest to you, to see how many transfers and grad players they had last year - most have a few. A lot of D3 schools are liberal arts colleges without grad programs, but there definitely are many that do have grad schools.

So in reading your posts again, my question is this. Do you plan to get an MA in finance after you graduate anyway, and are wondering about whether you could play baseball at the new school? And in that case, are you wondering whether a D3 coach could help you with admissions to the grad program? Or, do you want to play more baseball and therefore look to get an MA in finance? I ask because there are different answers depending on which is driving the bus. I would imagine that at some...

First, 99.9% of NCAA rule violations are there for the school, not the student, so don't worry about that. If you were to contact a coach at a new school, it would be his responsibility to politely tell you that he can't talk to you until you're in the portal. How is your relationship with your current coach? You're going to have to talk to him about your plans. Hopefully, it won't be an issue since you are graduating anyway. Many grad schools have application deadlines coming up (some may...

Any employer doesn't have to keep you if you are not getting the job done. Neither does the programs AD if the coaches aren't either. It trickles down. I believe this whole thing has to do with who is better at recruiting and who is better at practice and who can identify which player is right for your program and who isn't. I think that there is a lot of hoarding going on. Some coaches are better putting together a roster, others not. Not all is equal. This goes for every program in every...

If you are cut is one of the provisions to a second transfer that will probably get approved. But what percent are we talking? Less than .05% or less. How many guys can you name that transferred once and then a new coach came in and cut that player? That is probably when you need to consider moving down a level of play anyways. BTW, I've experience the ugly side of baseball twice but my kids are better coaches because of it. One stuck it out and continued to participate. The other changed...

Everything is lopsided in favor of the schools over the players. Always has been. The primary purpose of the NCAA is to keep it that way. Now that some things have been done that favor the players, namely NIL and the one time transfer w/ no penalty, a lot of the old guard is losing their sh$t.

Re: NCAA Updates Rules for Undergraduate Transfer Waivers

But to be clear, that is in reference to a 2nd transfer for an athlete who isn't eligible for the one-time transfer exception (typically because they already used it up). And this should not impact a standard 4-2-4 transfers. Bottom line, it will make it less likely that you can play immediately after your 2nd transfer.

I’m joking. Of course they shouldn’t have to sit out…neither should a kid. The coaches are getting $$$, the kids’ hourly wage is almost assuredly below minimum. I actually kinda like Gundy’s idea of yearly contracts. At least everyone is on the same page.

New and improved “Transfer Portal 2023” thread…

used2lurk ·
There was another thread in the fall that that turned into a dumpster fire. How about a new thread with some general info? 1. When does the portal open and close for summer of 2023? 2. I know D1baseball posts portal info. Anyone know when they might post current players? (I subscribe but only see 2022 info on the site as of the other day) 3. Lets hear pros/cons for players entering after freshman/sophomore/junioryears? Anyone have any other questions or info please post to help others.

Does that 48% number include grad transfers? We have a few in the portal who threw their names in the ring in the event they had breakout senior years knowing they had very little interest in continuing. I also think the 48% is optimistic. The 48% is for NCAA schools. Does that number climb to 80% is you include NJCAA?

What does "student-athletes reported to have enrolled..." mean? Reported how? Are they going by the NCAA eligibility center? If that's the case that's just covering players that transferred to another D1 or D2 school, not D3s or or JUCOs.
