Pre-season team conditioning

Cabbagedad asked the following question in the Power360 thread. Rather than hijack the thread, I thought I would respond and start a separate conversation here. cabbagedad posted: So, Matt, maybe you can provide some additional advice. Apologies to others for diversion of OP but I didn't want to PM and prevent others from any shared information. Our HS field is not at the HS campus and the campus fitness facility is too small and lacks proper equipment anyway. We try to put together a plan...

Austin - FYI- when I tried to go to your site, Chrome screamed at me about there being a security issue regarding a certificate mis-match. I was eventually able to convince Chrome to let me through anyway - but it may be something you need to investigate. My oldest is planning on doing his undergrad in Athletic Training and after that med school, so he's become a conditioning junkie of sorts. I ordered him a copy of McKeefery's book from your site. Hopefully he can make some side money while...

Thanks Matt! This is awesome. Lots of detail, organization and reasoning. Very much appreciated. Some follow questions... We have occasionally included yoga and some of the P90X stuff - any opinions there? I've been trying to think of solutions for makeshift equipment at the field to allow for box jumps and pull-up/chin-ups. Any ideas? You mention "shot put" with med balls. Is that literal? We do several drills with them but I'm not familiar with this one.

I personally like yoga. If it were me, I would put yoga and other flexibility/mobility work at the end of the workout. P90X can be good from a conditioning standpoint and for some variety, especially in your situation with limited equipment. Crossfit has some bodyweight workouts that you can implement as well - I have some personal criticisms of Crossfit (the random nature of the workouts to "prepare for the unknown", baseball players should stay away from kipping pull-ups, and I am not a...

I'd add in jumping rope and keeping an individual log book to track progress. The coaches should check weekly and adjust as necessary. Make sure they eat and sleep as much as possible. If you do hill sprints or run bleachers, make sure you run both ways - up and down. Time them for reps and log into your book to track progress.

We're conditioning 4x a week and use the other days to focus on fundraising to get more equipment. Once a week we get weight room time at a local community college. We do the 5x5 routine. We also have 41" pullup bands that go from 15-300lbs that can be used for squats, deadlifts and chest presses. We have agility ladders, cones, hurdles, medicine balls, jump ropes and plyo boxes. We mix in other sports once a week for cross training.... basketball drills for footwork and timing, handball for...

5x5 is a quality rep scheme for building strength. For HS athletes getting into the gym 1x a week, you should be able to keep a linear progression for a decent length of time. In other words, if the starting point is right, you should be able to add an incremental amount of weight each week for several months to each athlete's lifts, depending on their training history. Good on you for mixing in the other sports in the off-season. I think it's important for building more well-rounded...

Off-season Conditioning Routine

Nick Asmar ·
I’m a 14 year old who is going to be trying out for my schools team this March. How often should I be getting in batting practice and how many swings should I aim to take each session? I’m currently getting around 300 swings a week. I also try to incorporate some time each week to conditioning and strength training. Any tips for my routine would be appreciated. thank you, Nick Asmar

Hey, as a 13 yr old here, I also do some of the same things you do. For speed and agility drills, try to get an agility ladder(pretty cheap) and try some variations to work on your footwork. As far as speed drills not being done outside, try plyometrics(can be done indoors in a larger space like garage) and sprints if you can get to an indoor facility. Stay away from distance running, doesn't help for baseball and also slows you down since you get used to training slow. If you have social...

For conditioning I usually just do body weight exercises (push-ups, sit-ups, etc.) what type of speed/agility drills would you recommend? I can’t really do anything outdoors because of the weather here in Michigan.

Keep up the strength training. What do you do for conditioning? I would work on speed and agility drills in place of old school “conditioning”.

Thank you. I’ll look into the agility ladder and start doing some sprints.

do you have a walk/driveway that needs shoveling? full disclosure, i'm from Hawaii and live in California so I don't know much about snow but I've thrown my share of dirt around and I know that's a heck of a workout. can you incorporate shoveling every other day (or every day if it needs it)? you get some upperbody work, posterior chain work, core/twisting work, aerobic activity, etc.

Lots of great advice here, body weight plyometrics are great ways to develop strength and power. Weight training is another option but I would not advise it unless you are supervised for proper technique and that may be hard at home. Please do not neglect the hitting and throwing prep. Remember if you can throw gas or mash, they will find room for you on the team. Lastly one of the old timers made a great statement about team practices...it is not to make you better, it is an opportunity for...
