He's also a very mature kid and has travelled extensively internationally. He's been a three sport varsity athlete since his freshman year and quarterbacked the football team this past fall. A Player's Confidence

hitting4dudes ·
We all know the peaks and valleys in competitive sports. We have even heard pro's and coaches say they try and stay on a median plane no matter how it's going. I believe confidence fuels this state of mind. Confidence is wild and hard to grasp. All players should have it, but how many really do? Confidence does not relate to instant gratification. Confidence is derived from hard work and utilized in specific moments of time. Confidence has purpose and comes through preparation for the task...

What To Expect At The Next Level?

D1__ ·
I'm a senior in high school who just signed to a D3 progam in VA (USA South) and based off of attending a few D3 games and speaking with some D3 players and Coaches I'm confident that I will be able to compete at this level. However, I'd like to get more insight into what I can expect going into my freshman year both on and off the field. Is their typically a drastic difference in the quality of pitching? Is the players schedule completely booked throughout the week? What would a typical day...

What questions should I ask on a campus visit?

First of all to all the dads on here that told me it was to late for me to play at the next level and that I should give up and play club ball I just wanna say my recruiting has picked up significantly thanks for the motivation! Now for my main question. I’ve spoken to a few schools recently and two of them have invited me and my dad one for a campus visit the other to a fall league game. My question is what questions should I ask these coaches once I arrive. A little background I’m a...

College Coach Sets Deadline On Offer - Is This Common?

JohnnyBaseballOG ·
A mid-level Division I coach at an academic school has offered my son, a rising senior, a roster spot on the team. He told him he needs an answer by a certain date next month. Just wondering if any of you can give me a sense of how common this is, what the deadline might mean, and how firm the deadlines generally can be. My son is a power hitting center fielder, and this is his first official offer from a coach. Thanks in advance for any responses!

Avoiding abusive coaches

John S ·
Hi folks -- In conducting your recruiting campaign, I'm just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how to avoid coaches who are continually abusive verbally (or even physically)? I'm guessing the only way really is to ask around, including former and current players, etc. My impression is that too many coaches are still allowed somehow to get away with this crap. Thanks very much, and happy U.S. Independence Day and Canada Day to everyone? -- John in Toronto.

Just a simple question ... Why would a kid listen to a sixteen year old versus a professional pitcher? Your heart is in the right place. I’m just not sure the effort will be effective.

Re: 16u pitcher launched a channel to help younger kids learn how to pitch. Needs your support and input.

Sirloindameaty ·
I guess the simple answer is that younger pitchers can be more relatable to kids than a pro. Also, not many pros have a Free detailed program online that teaches kids how to go from t-ball to HS Varsity level. Possibly because pro's are either busy or want to be paid in some way for their time. Granted there is no revolutionary information being relayed. Most of the content is "best practices" type of stuff. But, Good information can come from anyone. A lot of the pitching instruction videos...

I agree with you -- good content is good content, regardless of the age or experience of the presenter. Certainly pro pitchers bring more credibility to the table, but they are not necessarily good coaches and communicators. I think the video you linked to is pretty good and I hope the kid keeps it up.

@JCG Thanks for the reply. I think that if kids took the time and effort to engage in positive projects like this, it should be encouraged. There are enough people already on the other side of the equation giving criticism. How many pro's are teaching online and opening themselves up for criticism?

It is really cool to see a young man trying to give back to the community and the game! Creating a YouTube channel for pitching will bring value to many who may not have the resources to secure professional instruction. Feedback for improvement: 1) Watch a few YouTube videos on Camera presence. He does a great job of showing enthusiasm, but some thought should go into the viewer's experience as well. Meaning, all the unnecessary movement takes away from the viewer's ability to focus on the...

@Scott Muroe Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. I feel like your post is a good example of how forums like this should be used. Meaningful and constructive feedback is not always easy to come by on forums. Thank you! I'll pass the sentiment along. I think that collaboration with other programs may be a little ways down the road given time and age constraints.

In defense of those who choose not to provide feedback, this forum has a couple of members on it that have ruined it for people like you and I apologize for that. Why can't a 16 year old be an effective coach? Who knows? I am certain my son could teach younger kids to pitch better than a lot of coaches out there. I do just want to put one thing out there. I live in Texas. If my HS son gives lessons, helps someone out with baseball or similar and gets paid for it, it is a UIL violation and if you play on a high school team all of the games can (and most likely will) be forfeited. It happened here a couple years ago. ...

I just took a quick glance at this from work with no audio. My observation may be useful from this different perspective. The video is 4:18 long. There are three short 5 second action clips (two of them being identical). The remaining 4+ minutes are video of a guy talking. I don't even know what the topic was but kids young and old require a much higher ratio of visual demonstration and less talk. Even if he was just talking about what he was going to be presenting in the future, still need...

Yes, the Stalker Sport 2 seems to read about 1.0-1.5 MPH slower at 80+ MPH in our experience compared to a Stalker 2 Pro (the main scout gun these days). I've tested these products in so many different ways anyone else would go insane (various JUGS, Stalkers, Trackmans, Rapsodos, etc). We have industrial fluorescent lighting but I'm not actually sure that's the issue. I think the Stalker 2 Pro is just a better / hotter gun.

Probably a good indication.... unless it looks like girl's writing, gets his name wrong and asks him to come to camp for just $299 Usually, a personal hand written is a good sign but those sneaky marketing departments these days... depends what it says.

I'd say 1 MPH is a bit high. Sometimes it's dead on. The average overall is probably slightly below 1 MPH. We gunned a pro pitcher with our Stalker Sport 2 and he sat 92-94 but when we had the same gun on him for scouts, he was sitting 93-95 on the Stalker Sport 2 and 94-96 touching 97 on the Stalker Pro 2. So there's a difference, but it MIGHT only be important at 90+ MPH. It may read 70-75 MPH just fine. I am not sure.

DAG, as a former D1 compliance director, I'm curious to know (although I don't expect you to say publicly) whether the letter was written to the coach about your son (which I would view as borderline acceptable), or whether it was written as if being sent directly to your son (crossing the line in my opinion)? Congrats to your son on getting that level of interest as a sophomore! However, if a coach is playing loose with the rules while recruiting your son, will he be playing loose with...

We had mentioned this program with our travel coach. Our coach has been around a long time and is old school. That being said, he hesitated and stated that "the coach has a very strong personality. Some guys do fine with him and others have a hard time with the coach." Take that for what it's worth, but it definitely made us reprioritize programs.

William and Mary has pumped millions of dollars into their athletics programs the past several years. It is the only school in the country, outside the Power 5 to have a student-athlete drafted from the basketball, baseball and football teams last year. In my humble opinion it is on the rise and definitely worth taking a look if you are ever in southeastern Virginia.
