6’2” 160 throwing mid 80’s at fourteen is very projectable as a D1 pitcher. Maybe stockier, more filled out kids look bigger. But your son has great size for his age. My son needs at least one new glove every year due to a medical condition (profuse hand sweating - think Albert Brooks in "Broadcast News"). As an aside, it also derailed his basketball and pitching careers and means he needs a different pair of batting gloves for each at-bat (he will go through 5 or 6 in a cage session). Welcome to the site David! Any glove that is appropriately sized will do fine if you are a capable outfielder. Instead of a specific recommendation I would recommend and approach to selecting the glove that is right for you. How much time do you have to break in the glove? The answer to this question will determine if you should focus on "game ready" gloves that are easy to break in or if you have the time to get a little better quality leather and break it in the way you like. My 2023 has only attended one showcase and it was as a pitcher & 1 st base. All of his throws during the position portion of the showcase were from 1 st to 2 nd , and his infield velo was clocked at 70 mph. He can throw much harder than 70 mph (FB clocked at 80 MPH). Should he identify as a middle infielder or 3 rd base at the next event so that he has the opportunity to get his infield velo up?

Not a bad idea but depends on the event. Most used to lump IF's (except maybe 1b's) and have them all throw from SS for IF velo so it wouldn't matter in that instance. It's possible that this is changing? BTW, what was his P velo for that event? Still, and again, no hurry for a 2023. The single best thing to do to improve his velo readings is wait a year or two

Cabbagedad: He has 3 pitches he throws with any regularity; FB (79-80), Slider (74-75), and a change (72-74). He started throwing a sinker/2 seam in practice and flat surface but only used it a few times in a game. He’s about 6’0”/180 lbs and growing.

Thank you all for the comments. These forums are excellent in the fact that I feel I'm not alone! I think out first step may be to do 1 showcase and get some good numbers but in the meantime keep doing what he's doing.

Well, shoot, you got me started ... As a side note, he may want to keep in mind as he develops... just a bit more differential between FB velo and changeup velo would be advisable. There are a few easy ways to knock the CU velo down a tick without showing less arm speed/effort. And, IMO, if he isn't above-average sharp with each of the first three pitches you mention, I think he would benefit far more by focusing on honing those rather than start tinkering with a fourth. The old saying still applies " if you hit....they will find a position for you." Playing multiple positions can be an advantage as it gives a coach options defensively while keeping a bat in the lineup. My son was RC's number 2 choice on th board for his natural position. With Son also playing 2 other positions the RC made a decision to extend an offer anyway with the knowledge that so long as he shows progress with the bat he would have an opportunity to compete at position A, B, C and DH.

I agree. I think playing multiple positions is better for your frosh. Regarding age, my kid is November born 2022 and younger than some of the 2023. His measurables (baseball but more importantly grades) are in the 2022 group. For me personally, while it is nice to be the older stud, being younger put a chip on my kid's shoulder and that motivated him to work harder

EM: Welcome to the Board. Your son is still young and should continue to play multiple positions as long as he can and as each team he plays sees fit. Some showcases allow for multiple positions, usually for not much more $. My son was recruited for and received offers playing both MI and CF. He made it a point to keep both OF and IF mitts with him. I wouldn't worry about position at all... Worry about hitting and WORK to be the best, most consistent, most powerful, most linedrive producing to all fields hitter you can be... Position will sort itself out!!!

Since you're going to a school with a new coaching staff, you might ask what drew the coaches to the college and what they like about it, plus what they would like to change moving forward and how you might fit into that new direction.

Congrats to you!!! Hope one of those schools ends up being a great fit for you! As for questions, I think a lot depends on what you hope to accomplish as a student and athlete at said school. I know my son wanted to know about player development. What is their track record in terms of developing players? Do they do their best to provide all players multiple opportunities to perform in games and prove themselves? In terms of academics, do they support players who choose to challenge...

Hi, Its a 7 game guarantee over 6 days. With Standard perfect game pitching restrictions. After the 7 game guarantee there will be a championship bracket, but you have to play in. What I want to avoid is spending the money and the time from work (1 week), to attend a tournament that we will not be competitive in.

We do not have any Pitcher only's, we only have position players who also pitch. We have a couple players that we have not utilized at all for pitching who train for pitching and could do well given the chance. Which, it seems they will get if we go. Here's a question? If everyone pitched, would 14 players be enough? It seems as if it would take careful planning to make the pitching rotations work for that many games. That is 2 pitchers per game with everyone pitching.

Are you talking about the WWBA July 7-14? If so, that is the biggest PG tourney for 16u when it comes to the amount of teams and the quality of teams. I wouldn't consider going there with no less than 10 pitchers and at least 6 of those being PO's. Most good teams you see there will have 20+ players. You will probably not be very competitive with pitchers throwing in the low to mid 70"s. You will see a lot of mid to high 80's. Unless you have a bunch of D1 hitters and fielders, you will...

You would be wise to "regroup". You really do need 2 catchers + a multi position guy to fill in...And at least 6-8 PO, with backups. To compete at this type event, a roster of 18-20+. Plan on HEAT & HUMIDITY! It will take a toll on these guys! You don't want to lose anyone to heat exhaustion (been there, done that with a catcher. NOT fun!) Keep 'em hydrated, potassium tabs & ice water cloths/towels in dugout.

Your catcher better not get hurt and he will have to be an iron man. You do not have enough pitching. It is possible you could be c ompetitive for one or two games. Mid 70s pitchers can sometimes win a game with some luck, but they will not draw much interest. I would either pick up a few players, especially pitchers and another catcher. If that isn't possible, you need to contact Perfect Game ASAP and tell them your situation and that you are not coming. Last minute teams dropping out...

Just came back from a WWBA qualifier, 40 teams. We had 14 kids, 8 of which are good pitchers, and we still lost a game due to pitching. Hardest thrower in our pool was 90. Saw 1 86 and a lot of mid 80s. Our team had 2 84s, 2 83s and 2 that touched 80. There were teams that probably shouldn't have been there, but it is quite an experience for the boys.

My son plays 14u and we often see low 80's at these PG events, and high 70's is the norm, again that is 14u. Have you looked up pitchsmart rules? Here they are for 16u: 0-30 pitches = 0 days rest 31-45 pitches = 1 day rest 46-60 pitches = 2 days rest 61-75 pitches = 3 days rest 76+ = 4 days rest Max of 95 pitches per day With high 70's pitchers I would suspect you are more likely to have a 15-20 pitch inning than an under 10 pitch inning, so basically your pitchers are good for MAYBE 2...

Thank you all for the advice. I agree that we are short on pitching and catching and am quite concerned about this. Unfortunately, it seems as if we have passed the window for a credit towards another event, they do not offer refunds. We will be in the situation of losing quite a bit of money. Have your coach pick up some local kids. Here is a board that is for north GA: http://www.nwgabaseball.org/ Post in the "High School Team Openings or Tryouts section" asking for local players to join your team for the event. I'd open it up for 14u (Major) and up. The 14u's are done in early July and available....to be blunt, you need bodies so your kids aren't wrecked.

Its Ok! The only thing to do now is try to learn from it. You will likely face some of the better teams you have ever seen. Most likely will get beat, but keep a good perspective, stay positive. If your boys (and parents and coaches) stay positive and look around, they will see what they need to work on to compete at this type of tournament. You can still have fun, try hard and see what happens. Just understand that the numbers really don't add up for what you are carrying on your roster.

Mercy Rules: 15 after 3, 12 after 4, 8 after 5 . Pool Play: All Pool Play games will be played with a strict two hour time limit Primary goals are #1) keep everyone safe from heat/injury and #2) have fun. At a minimum, try to get some decent scheduling with some games in the evening.

My son's team had 12 position guys (2 or 3 also pitched) and at least 7 or 8 PO's when we went. We played 8 games and really didn't have enough pitching for that amount...we'd have been in deep trouble if we went any deeper in the tourney. You might even start a new post on here asking if anyone wants to help out....at lot of GA/FL posters here who may have a son who would like to throw a few innings at that event

I have seen a few teams send emails out to players who are able to handle that level of competition and recruit nationally to fill their needs. There are plenty of pitchers who would love to get that exposure . Pitching in that event is quite an experience. Same for catchers. Get out and find more pitchers and catchers who can help your team compete...otherwise it wont be much fun and you will not have enough pitching even if you do manage to win your pool and move on to playoffs.

My son is a sophomore in your position. For now he is pitching varsity and doing some DH. If he can't get time on the field, he has talked to the coach about playing on jv when he isn't pitching.

How big? My son's school is 4,000 kids and they only have one varsity. I wish they had 2.
