Here is my point from the original post. But this deals with a catcher and a SS/ RHP. 2 different players. The catcher and the SS/RHP at a ______ event threw a 1.87 pop time and his velo from the radar gun was 71 MPH. The SS/ RHP was 80 from SS but was 88-93 on the mound pitching. The radar gun doesn't give you a correlation. Its the carry on the ball thats important.

Re: Coaches Video

twotex ·
I have a different question. Does he want to catch in college, and does he believe he can be a D1 catcher? He is getting to the point in the recruiting process where focusing on goals is important. I haven't watched his video yet, but from your description and his size, he sounds like a middle infielder with good speed. My suggestion would be to consider focusing on his 60 time and velo across the infield. Good luck!

Well...Therein lies the issue that I floated around with to myself. I didn't say too much about it when he asked about catching video except that I would see what I had. And you're right, you do really have to focus on what you want to do in a manner that would depict actual goals. In fact, my response was basically "well, if that's what you want..." One thing that I learned early on (like when he was 10 or so) was that it's not what I want in all of this it's what he wants. He heard those...

From the time we first started thinking about this stuff, we mainly looked at DIII because my son simply wanted to go to a really good school with a smallish student body (2000 or less)....his baseball skills didn't enter that initial 'framing' at all. We figured if he threw 85 or 95 it just didn't much matter where he played so long as he was able to play. In most everything besides baseball, DI's were never a 'fit' for our kids interests and view of what he wants his college experience to...

I mentioned earlier the staff last year at South Caldwell HS. Madison Bumargner at 94-95 LHP 1st Rd Pick , Justin Poovey at 92-94 RHP Florida , Jimmy Messer at 88-90 UNC recruit. Now is that average? No in fact its far from it. Also last year here in NC at Fred Foard HS they had Trent Rothlin 91-93 Clemson , Aaron King LHP 87-89 Surry CC , Chad Rothlin 86-87 UNCC , Andrew Wyantt USC Upstate 85-87. Thats four guys in your rotation in HS three D-1 and 1 that would have been if not for grades.

Re: What are the velocities of your HS team rotation?

Coach May ·
Great post. Here is my experience. Lets say a kids max velo is 85. He will tend to pitch in the 81-83 maybe 80-83 range. A few times during the game you will see him peak at his max. If a kids max is 85 he is not going to pitch at that range. If he does it wont be for long. Not very long at all. Kids that pitch at their max usually do not have alot of success. They tend to struggle with control. They tend to get hit hard alot. Hitters time pitchers. Pitchers that routinely stay in the same...

I think the unproven pitcher w/100 mph velo is a great example of drafting on projection rather than experience. I never felt that all the other intangibles (hustle, desire, commitment, character, yada, yada) were major factors in DRAFTING players however those are the characteristics that commonly determine a successful progression up the ranks of MILB and on into MLB. It's tough to know how a player that has had everything in the past will respond to having to ride a bus all night long and...

I am not a pitcher, but my Dad and brother were, and here is my two cents. My Dad, who learned this from his first coach in pro ball, always told me, "Pitching is three things:" LOCATION, MOVEMENT, & DECEPTION Notice there is no talk of velocity in there, and if you want to put an emphasis on velo, consult Maddux and Glavine first The last thing I will say is about the best pitch in baseball, also something I learned very early from my Dad. What is the best pitch in baseball? STRIKE ONE.

Velo is king. There's enough players that will meet the minimum velo requirement, Subsequently those that are effective at a lower velo would not be afforded a opportunity.

Re: Most important trait of a pitcher?

Velo allows your the opportunity to make the team, to take the mound to compete. The OP son is a hitters worst nightmare. It could be a challenge to find a spot beyond HS or in HS depending on the pitching depth of the team. Not because he cannot get hitters out. He will not be afforded the opportunity to compete because of the emphasis placed on velocity.

Re: Post Labrum Surgery

That is a red flag. The labrum is an area with very little blood flow, therefore healing is very slow. Our doctor emphasized and was emphatic about not rushing rehab regardless of how Junior feels. There was a prescribed timeline that we were told not to deviate from except to hold up at any time there was pain and rest, therefore setting the timeline back. Junior was very lucky and made it all the way back. He followed the prescribed rehab and throwing program precisely. He had one two week...

I think each family needs to choose a timeline for themselves based on how well they're likely to show at that time (as well as any other family and financial considerations). Some generalizations: Generally, if you're a definite blue chipper with realistic pro potential that informed people outside your circle acknowledge, showcasing early can draw elite college and pro interest. (But if you're in this category, you already know it and don't need advice from me.) Generally, if you're an...

When did your son attend the PG showcase? My guy's velo was good at WWBA this year, but didn't want to do the December showcase because he was afraid he couldn't reach maximum velocity during the off-season. Sure enough, we did camps instead and he was a few MPH lower than his max -- low enough that no one was impressed. Struck out 20 out of 30 with only one walk, but it didn't seem to matter. Learned his lesson -- no more events in the off-season. Your son and mine both have plenty of...

He attended 1 in Jan 2010 (before the HS season) and 1 in Aug 2010 (after the long showcase season). For him, I think it is more of the "mental aspect" of "it's for show" versus "it's a game I am pitching to win"....Hence the great showing at WWBA....He knows that is a mental adjustment he will have to make. His stats speak for themselves, but the concern/question is does anyone look at the stats if the velo is not "off the charts"....Thanks for the encouragement and good luck to your son

TPM is correct. The higher the veolcity, the more bigger (sometimes better) programs will nibble. My $0.02;...based on our experience and others, coaches (recruiters) look little at stats, but rather observe skills. Is the kid's arm action smooth? Can he repeat it? Is he around the plate, at the knees? How effective does he command secondary pitches? How much movement does his fastball have? Some can "pitch" at higher velocity than others, but pitchability is usually the priority, imo. When...

Princeton brought in one LHP this year. On scout day (end of fall practice) he threw 88-92. After his junior year (same camps) he was 84 (Stanford) and 87 (Headfirst). Keep working; obviously, the faster the better. Re: PG UNDERCLASS REPORTS

2Bmom ·
With regard to whether or not to go back in June, a coach gave us this advice: unless something big has changed, like a significant increase in speed or velo, or a major growth spurt, there's no need. Just wait until next year. They're still going to look at those objective measures anyway. I'm sure someone will weigh in on the rotational thing. I'm thinking it's just an observation. But I was wrong at least once before.

He received a 6.5. Going in I figured he was a 7. He performed terribly in games, and throws were much worse than usual, no carry, reduced velo. Regardless, the score is fair imho for what the scout saw. We were thinking of going in June and workout as MIF. Not sure though.

If he had hit (at all) in the games, I think it would have showed he could handle the wood better and would've had maybe a 7. I'm pleased overall considering his rough start. Re: Focus Issues

Is he by any chance going through a growth period? It's not uncommon problem for growing pitchers, my son always had some issues with velo jumps, which meant dial down for awhile and concentrate on hitting spots. This isn't an uncommon problem, if he has an instructor it's best that he diagnose any issues. Remember that this is a process that is never ending, mine is 25 and still working at it.
