Data driven analysis of Astro's cheating

BOF ·
The analytical types should find this very interesting. Tony Adams has done a pretty amazing job of analyzing the data and has it detailed down to the number of "bangs" per player. http://signstealingscandal.com/ Of the 8,274 pitches tracked there were 1,143 "bangs". It should be noted that a lack of a "bang" could indicate a pitch type so it is difficult to get an accurate assessment of the number of pitches that were foreshadowed. Enjoy.

Catchers Mitt

Ben Salk ·
Hello everyone, I am looking to buy a new mitt. I don't have any experience with the two mitts I am interested in (Wilson a2000's and All Star pro). Which is better in durability and time to break in. Also I am aware that the all star is $100 more so I just want to know which is the best bang for my buck.

However, there’s no way to know how the results of games were specifically affected.

Re: Data driven analysis of Astro's cheating

just because a team(s) may have beaten the Astros during the period they were known to have cheated doesn’t mean we should look the other way? That’s kind of a silly approach. “Yeah, we know they were trying to win by cheating, but because they lost or we cannot quantify the efficacy of their methods, we have to give them a free pass.” That doesn’t fly with me. If they were breaking a known rule with the intent of gaining an advantage in the game, they need to be held responsible, regardless...

I never mentioned giving anyone a free pass. But you can’t determine the result of the Astros season based on the provided analysis. You can only make general assumptions. The analysis isn’t needed for assumptions.

I looked quickly on twitter at some of the guys graphs, method, etc. My biggest takeaway is how die hard an Astros fan he is, and how much this sucks. Not all Astro fans are making excuses, minimizing or defending their actions. If you take a step back and look at the whole, including how MLB went about their investigation, it is more stomach turning. By quickly granting immunity to all the Astro players, they allow the stain to stay on Houston baseball for a very long time. What this guy...

Agreed. But it's still interesting to see how effective the cheating really was, and how many additional wins it resulted in (to see the impact) and how it impacted players stats. This is in no way to excuse what they did. If the cheating is shown to be totally ineffective and had no impact at all (didn't result in extra wins or higher OPS number or adversely affected a pitcher's stats), it still doesn't make it right. It would just be interesting info for me (and I assume for others also).

I'm not a data scientist, but it looks like a smoking gun to me. I'm getting really curious about what MLB is going to find on the Red Sox. Possibly Cora refined the cheating process so well that publically available data (trash can banging) is not available? It has been fairly quiet on the news front with this story, but certainly many other things going on in the world

When this scandal broke, my 1st thought was this goes much deeper into other teams. MLB has just opened a can of worms. No reason to not feel that way based on how quickly teams distanced themselves from Houston. Players should have consequences, but lets face the simple truth. MLB doesn't want to mess with the player's union. However, I will be curious to see how Dusty handles it for the upcoming seasons. This could be quite interesting with an "old school" guy running a "new school" team.

Dusty Baker will draw attention away from the Astros by not winning championships.

I am impressed with the effort, but if he would have broken it down it at the batter level, we could make more sense of the crazy home batting stats some players had. Yeah I know I am being greedy

Uhh it is. Go the page and click on the "Team Total" dialog box and the players show up in a drop down.

Some really fascinating data... But why no info on postseason games?

The Dodger fan club, Panatone 294, is planning a outing to the Angels - Astro's game April 3rd. That should be a fun game... I think the Astros are in for very long season when visiting other venues. The players escaped retribution and have acted very arrogant and none have apologized for their verified cheating. I think fans around the country are going to be very vocal. https://pantone294.com/product...riant=31443348258850

Bought my son the All Star Pro and he loves it! Easy to break in. Had a Wilson before this one and would only buy All Star again for him. Mitt blew out during preseason so was curious how soon it would be ready for games, no problem.

Both are good mitts. Son has them both. Both break in good. Both hold up to heavy use. He got about 2 years of heavy use out of the a2000 and needed restringing. Now it's his back up. You can't go wrong with either.
