Wise and well written post! Congrats on your son's finding a good home and continuing his baseball career! JUCO is a great path for many and can be a worthwhile step to DI and the draft (or for that matter, a degree and career outside of baseball). But for those student athletes who have high level GPAs, test scores, etc. and can be admitted to a HA school, JUCO may not be the best fit academically. Sounds like your son made a good choice. Happy V Day.

Congratulations Rdeangel... You're in an exciting spot with the prospect of playing college baseball ahead of you. More knowledgable posters than I will give you some specifics on this hopefully, but I think it really comes down to A) YOUR specific baseball AND college goals; and B) the fit of each specific college that you're looking at. For a lot of players, the chance to play D1 baseball will carry a lot of weight... It's the overriding goal. No question that D3 baseball is less demanding...

I don't think that its about D1 vs D3 or some other level. All coaches want to win and to win you need players to work at it. I would expect that the expectation level at a D1 is higher but I know JC coaches that expect their kids to put in as much work as D1 schools. If you want to play you need to know that it is a huge time commitment. My son is at a NAIA school and his typical schedule is wake up at 5:30am, workout from 6-7, class from 7:30 - noon, each lunch, hangout, on the field by...

As SG said, Congrats on the opportunity to play college baseball. If you are hoping to be involved in other campus activities/organizations besides baseball, whether that be student government, a fraternity, performing in school musical or theatre productions, etc., you're probably a better fit for D3. Most Division I athletes, baseball or any other sport, don't have much extra time to be involved in those activities. I'm not saying it can't be done, but you should discuss those desires with...

First for your specific questions: At a high level a D1 programs play 56 games plus any playoff games, at the D3 level it is 40 plus playoff games. D1 travel is more demanding usually a Fri/Sat/Sunday game with a mid week game thrown in. D3, they try to compress it into two days if a facility has lights with one day a double header. Top programs are also playing a mid week game For Northern Eastern D3 programs their 40 game schedule gets crammed into two months sometimes and some teams are...

The day to day schedule will be very similar. The D1 schedule is longer. Chances are the bus trips are longer. If there's a game and a test the academic D3 player will be at the test. The D1 player better get it rescheduled (a generalization, not always true). An issue with D3s is they are typically much smaller schools. A needed class may only be available in the afternoon.

May I ask why you limited your question to DIII? DII schools offer athletic scholarships, and junior colleges are typically much less expensive than DIII.

I know that the school my son attends prides itself on diversity. There are Scholarships targeted at international students. For instance I did a search, for scholarships on the Web site of my sons school and came up with this. http://choose.owu.edu/financia...onalScholarships.php I am sure this school is not the only one to offer scholarships to international students. I believe the deadlines are different as well. You may want to narrow your search to the schools you know offer...

As with anything in life you will get what you put into it. While I consider myself an advocate of D3 schools, you can get a great education going many routes. Junior college is a great option, and cost effective. If you have the drive to learn, you can get a great education anywhere. I know people who did not go to college yet they still feel they got a great education, in the working world.

Are you planning to enter college in the fall of 2015? If so, some of that scholarship money is already spoken for. As with athletics, I think you'll also find some overlap in academic distinction between DII and DIII colleges. But as others have advised, a "great education" means different things to different people. What does "great education" mean to you? High paying job after undergrad? Impressive diploma? Great resume for graduate school? Intellectual challenge? Think carefully about...

If you share with us "the mistakes that have held you back in the recruiting process", maybe we can go from there. Are you keeping coaches up to date of your travel schedule and game times/locations each week? You are not hearing from the D1s because they HAVE stopped recruiting for the class of 2018. There may be walk on positions left, but I would focus on D3s. A great public D3 in VA is Christopher Newport. Public D3s are hard to find in our area, and there are very few D2s with baseball.

As far as mistakes I believe that I didn't seek out a better travel program to play with until this year, previously I played with a mediocre team that didn't help me develop or get exposure, another mistake would be not making a high quality recruiting video like others that i know, and lastly I'd say my training I've played Varsity since freshman year and as soon as I got there my High School coach was serious about baseball players not lifting weights so for my first and second years of...

What are your grades and scores? Whatever those are, identify the schools which would recruit a player with your academic profile. Then, evaluate which of those schools recruit players who you believe have equal or less baseball skills than yours. That subset (the point at which a school(s) finds its way onto both lists) are the total schools with whom you would have a shot. Factor in your financial ability to pay and your geographic limitations (if any) and the list winnows down further. Of...

While I agree with Goose' really good outline, I wouldn't pooh-pooh the JUCO that is interested just yet. Find out where those players feed into. There is nothing wrong with 1-2 yrs at a JUCO, as long as it's heading you in the right direction. Make sure all/most the credits transfer.

You admit to having made a few tactical mistakes along the way; but, you are to be roundly commended for taking overall responsibility for your recruitment. I've always felt that too many players were willing to acquiesce to their parents' inclination to step in and run their son's process. In your case, you're demonstrating a great deal about your "makeup" that will mean something to many of the recruiters who are given an opportunity to know that you have it. Your self-drive and...

You are small, with limited arm strength and power and are slow. You are not going to play at a D1, period. Christopher Newport is a top D3 program and has D1 talent on that team (at least the middle infielders) , so don't waste your time at a top 20 D3 program. You can check out D3 programs at d3baseball.com to find a programs that might fit you. All that said, if you want to contribute to a program you will have to find a D3 that has a combination of what you can afford, matches your...

Focus on schools with the idea that you aren't going to play baseball...because honestly, you're probably not going to. If you do that, and end up making the team, then great--that's a nice bonus. At this point, though, baseball is probably telling you that it's over.

Why be he'll bent on going to a 4 year d1 where you might get a late pick up but chances are you may sit more than you will play. Just remember that if you committ to a JUCO, you can committ later to a D1. However, this might be your best option, in 2 years you will have another even better option than what you are facing now. Wow, going to be devil's advocate for the OP as well as other 2018 who may read this. It is July of your rising senior year. Yes, many D1 schools are done and much of the scholarship money has long been committed. But there are many schools (D1 included) who are still looking to add an arm, add a player they need or even just like...many commitments continue to happen, but you have to be focused on the right level academically (unclear from OP where that might be) as well as baseball talent...
