Congratulations to Evan and to the entire Trinity team. Yesterday, behind 2 freshman, Trinity won the SCAC Championship and the Conference automatic Regional bid beginning in about 3 weeks. Evan will certainly make the All Tournament team with his 9-15 performance. We will have to wait until the end of May to see how many more school and conference records Evan will break, in addition to the career RBI mark and school single season RBI mark. There will be more, just a question of how many.

Dream104, Unfortuntely for you the Ivy season and playoffs are over. Dartmouth beat Columbia 2 out of 3 last week to earn an NCAA bid. BOF's suggestion is a good one for anyone interested in a particular team or Division. This is exactly what I did this past Spring. I saw Dartmouth play UVA and Columbia play Richmond. Of course I didn't realize these teams would win their Ivy divisions. I made my own talent assessment from those pitching performances. I shared those assessments on this...

It is hard to sum up in a short synopsis. Freshman year was everything I was warned it would be. Going from playing every inning of every game in high school to pitching very few innings and starting 5 games and coming in as a defensive replacement late in some games took some adjustment. Exit interview after year it is suggested he work on 1st base over summer, position is open, but don't forget to throw once in awhile. Come Spring, he is the starting pitcher in two games in Florida, and...

But just the CHANCE. For the past two years at least, the #4 seed has beaten the #1 seed in the district tournament such that to earn the tournament bid a team had to win two games.

Bucknell didn't win their conference, they came in fourth. They did win their conference tournament at the end of the season which gave them the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament out of the Patriot League. The Patriot League is fairly top heavy with Army the clear cut favorite and Bucknell usually in the mix and fielding good teams.

My school received what we were told was the last Pool C bid awarded in the country last spring. I had a final on the Monday and was up late studying the night before. I received a text from the shortstop, who was one of our senior captain, saying "We got in". I took the test that Monday and my tests Tuesday morning, and left Tuesday afternoon for a team banquet at the Regional location. Our first game was Wednesday, and we played five games until we were eliminated in the semifinal game on...

Hello JH, I have been reading your posts for a while and welcome a chance to have a conversation with you. I have a "for instance" for you that I think will play out this season. Currently, Heidelberg is ranked #2 and Marietta is ranked #6. Not only are they in the same region, but in the same conference as well. Only one of them can win the conference tournament. I think it would be reasonable to expect the loser to get an at-large bid, especially if they both continue to play the same high...

OH BBMom- Good question. I think that this issue could be an interesting one to look at, but wouldn't necessarily occur with only Heidelberg and Marietta. In the SCAC, Millsaps and Trinity are consistent regional qualifiers, and Birmingham Southern will be as soon as their probationary period is uplifted. In the NESCAC you have Trinity and Tufts. The LEC has Eastern Connecticut, Keene State and Southern Maine...and UMass-Boston surprised everyone last year by not only coming out of the...

As I mentioned, the regional experience wasn't so much about the level of competition as it was about the team atmosphere. We didn't expect to get a bid at all. In fact, we had already packed up our locker room and said goodbye to the seniors after the conference tournament. I was focused on my finals and then getting down to my summer team on the report date to get the next step of the baseball life started. Our ace last year was 1st Team All-America and a 4th round draft pick by the...

mrmom, That can happen and does. Assuming that conference has a post season tournament, the winner gets the Pool A automatic bid. If the second place team is nationally and regionally ranked and loses the Championship game, they are still eligible for and a strong candidate for a Pool C bid. The waiting is awful but it is worth it, as JH illustrates. Now if that team loses early in the post season tournament, their chances drop, even if they are ranked nationally and regionally. As JH...

Rhodes had a pretty crazy and certainly not all bad tournament, although we were eliminated last night. We started off by beating Hendrix on the strength of a great complete game performance by our ace. We kept rolling by beating Oglethorpe in the aforementioned 21 inning thriller. We started our #2 who was coming off an injury, and he had to exit early after just not being 100% healed. We then had a solid relief effort from one of our top set up guys for 2 and a third, followed by a 10 and...

Our season is (probably) officially over now. If the right teams lost this past weekend, and we took two from Hendrix, we would have been a lock for the at-large. The right teams lost, but Hendrix took Sunday's game from us on our senior day in the midst of storms that meant I had to help shop vac the outfield for a couple hours before the game, then an hour long tornado siren delay in the eighth before coming out again, reworking the field, and having the game called due to lightning after...

Interesting developments for Rhodes. We are currently ranked 5th in the region, which was a surprise after our loss this past weekend. I think I know more about the ranking process than I am supposed to, but I really am thankful for my coach putting is in the position that we were in. Being battle tested against an unbelievably tough schedule may very well pay off big time for us. The 5 seed in the South region has made it 7 out of the past 8 years. Coach tells us our odds probably aren't...

Mideast region fan here, son is a freshman at Heidelberg. Even though this is their 4th consecutive trip to regionals, it is their first ever at-large bid. As a Berg fan, I can tell you that Marietta is for real. Their pitching is unreal, and the heart of their batting order is almost impossible to get out. It is possible to beat them - we've won 1 of 4 meetings this year - but I don't see anyone beating them twice.

You've got to have more faith than that. This is baseball. If we were to just decide them on paper, we might as well not play the games. I don't see Marietta being a lock although no doubt a tough cookie. Go back to Fresno State who went in as a #4 seed and ended up winning the national championship. hokie - I am beginning to think the teams you root for are jinxed somehow (e.g, Baltimore, CNU)

My son did this exact thing this past weekend, and while I did't have a problem with it at the time, it's not something that I will let him again any time soon. Our team is currently playing in a 13U Fall doubleheader league. During the regular season, we have four catchers - 1 primary catcher and 3 substitutes (which includes our number 1 and 2 pitchers) to make sure we don't wear anyone out during tournaments. Unfortunately, all but one of our catchers (my son) are off playing football.

Then don't you run into a situation where the champion of that all city district gets an automatic bid into regional play and whoever draws that team basically gets a bye? I would think that the way it is currently is best for postseason play, although certainly not best for regular season matchups or for the morale of those city schools.
