I found these articles from Baseball America and the Blue Mountain news. Tracy Ringolsby Sept. 9, 2005 Hochevar in limbo Teams might have been wise to pass on Fowler native Luke Hochevar, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Tennessee who was considered a top-10 prospect in the draft but slipped to the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 40th pick. The Hochevar negotiations keep getting messier. He did not attend classes at Tennessee, allowing him to continue to negotiate with the Dodgers.

Re: Why are only six percent of college baseball players are black?

PGStaff ·
There are many reasons why the black population is so low in baseball. Some of the reasons have already been given. It’s really too bad because many of the very best players we see each year are black. What this means (I think) is out of those black players who are involved the percentage of very top prospects is much higher than whites. This should tell us that baseball is missing out on a lot of potential great players. (I think) I hate to say it, but I’m not sure anyone really cares quite...

Doug, I know where you’re coming from, but we don’t always see that disparity for some reason. Do you think the Upton’s. Delmon, Milledge, McCutchen, Nelson, Fowler, Weeks, Fielder, Willis, etc. and even the Carl Crawford football situation is having any impact at all. Here are 10 of several star athletes who attended our national showcase at Turner Field last year. These are all wide receivers, running backs, QBs and/or basketball stars. My son needs at least one new glove every year due to a medical condition (profuse hand sweating - think Albert Brooks in "Broadcast News"). As an aside, it also derailed his basketball and pitching careers and means he needs a different pair of batting gloves for each at-bat (he will go through 5 or 6 in a cage session). That being said, we are always monitoring ebay for batting and baseball glove deals. A new HOH, Global Elite, or A2000 at retail once or twice every year is tough. He...

Well 2m and a second and third rounder is not really that much of a penalty. I wonder if the cards got a whistle to sign away their first round pick for compensation so they did not have to forfeit a first rounder. Cards might have signed fowler anyway but the fine really made this move pay off because they didn't lose a first round pick.

Ken Rosenthal believes they got off easy. The Cardinals figured that they would lose their first round pick so went with Fowler. Pretty unbelievable to think son once was a Cardinal and the organization was driven by the "Cardinal Way". Seems a bit tarnished now.

Don't know how many teams would give a pitcher that throws that hard 5 years. Read in the paper today that Fowler got $82.5 million for 5 years..WOW (he definitely made right decision to take the Cubs at 1 year last year). I think the Cubs made the right moves. Chapman is a huge risk at that many years for that much money. He can go because they have Rondon, Strop, now Davis and future closer in Edwards. Davis is probably the stop gap for one year to let Edwards get more seasoning at the MLB level. All of those guys will compete in spring training to be the closer and Maddon will go with the hottest one. The Davis trade is right now benefitting the Cubs. Gave up a 4th outfielder for a top end closer but over...

Fingers crossed for Cleburne to perform well. Lost 4 starters (outfield and 1st base) from regional finalist team. But based on the fall, I believe that the outfield will be much better defensively, and definately has the potential to be better (with more power and speed) at the plate. The one position that is of worry is 1st, where we had a pretty good one over there. Should still be a young team, as we'll probably only start 2 seniors. Pitching should be deeper this year and should allow...

Actually the Cubs were constructed mostly through trades and free agents. Their entire pitching staff came from other organizations. All three of their catchers came from other organizations. They also got Fowler, Heyward, Zobrist, Russell, Rizzo and coglhan rom other organizations. The only three that they actually drafted, of those that were contributors, was Bryant, Baez and Schwarber. One thing that's perhaps not as well known is that Pepperdine is a dry campus. Students party of course but it's pretty much all off campus. As I'm sure you know WCC baseball is very good quality with nice facilities (in addition to the ocean view at Pepperdine USD, BYU and Santa Clara have really nice facilities. Fun road trips too (SF, Portland, San Diego). We catch the odd WCC game at Fowler Park (USD) from time to time and it's a great cbb experience.
